Work is currently underway for the start of the 2008 NFL season. Though it may seem early to most, new additions are being made at Bank of America Stadium. The most notable is the replacement of the video screens on both scoreboards.

In January, work began on a $12 million renovation to the video and sound system at Bank of America Stadium, which includes the installation of two new state-of-the-art scoreboards.

"We are continually striving to make Bank of America Stadium the best environment for our fans throughout the Carolinas to watch NFL football. For the past 24 months, we have been working with Getz & Associates on a plan to create the best option for replacing the current scoreboards in the stadium," said Panthers Stadium LLC President Jon Richardson. "Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Vision was recently selected as the new video board supplier."

Simply, fans will notice the new scoreboards to be bigger, better and clearer. But in technical terms, the new scoreboard video displays will be more than three times the size of the current ones. With 2,413-square feet of video display compared to 768-square feet on the current scoreboard, fans to Bank of America Stadium will notice the change immediately.

    New Scoreboard Old Scoreboard

    -Size 31.5' tall x 76.6' wide 24.0' tall x 32.0' wide

    -Weight 40,000 pounds 25,000 pounds

    -Video Display LED CRT

    -Resolution 10mm 40mm

-Video Display Size 2,413 square feet 768 square feet

    -Aspect Ratio 16:9 4:3

If you are in the uptown area, you may get a preview of the new scoreboards prior to the start of the season. Two large scale cranes will be put in place to remove the existing scoreboards and install the new video screens. The entire project will take approximately six months to complete.

To accommodate the new scoreboards, changes will occur in the infrastructure as well. With the new scoreboards weighing in at more than 40,000 pounds each, adjustments had to be made to the current scoreboard facade to accommodate the video screens. In addition, a new control room is being built concurrently during the offseason in preparation for the added equipment necessary to operate the new video screens.

"This project has been in the works for some time, and we are just as excited as the fans to see the new scoreboards in place for the 2008 season. It is something all fans will enjoy," Richardson said.

Long overdue but if they are functioning on opening day I'll be happy. It really does make a difference, the screens in Cinci two years ago blew me away.
