I think, between the drop of Proehl two years ago, and watching guys like Engram and Welker today, I think it's clear that slot WR play is critical and we're missing it.

I think we ended up wanting to run more 3/4 WR than we did, but still wouldn't have done as much as I would hope for.

SO what to do about it? Robinson looked like he could, long term, have some slot ability, but do we grab a vet? I was hoping for a vet who could run some slot, but have enough ability as a #2.

Wow, Patten is 33. Didn't think he was nearly that old.

But he might not be a bad choice. Stayed healthy last year and had a good # of catches.

Patten's age isn't that big a concern because we don't need him to be long term. He has the experience in the system, too. Not the only option, but a solid one.

DJ Hackett may be a good choice.

Not for the slot. Hackett is a guy who can serve as a #2, but he's going to get too much money anyway. In any case, if you just want someone to work out of the slot, hands and route running need to be your priorities. That isn't Hackett.

Chris Johnson from ECU could be an excellent slot guy for the Panthers, but I don't think that the Panthers will get him.

Robinson isn't awful, but we need WR help partially because of our youth. That guy can be a slot only, and you can use your youth to play on running downs for various situations, but you need a guy who can contribute. If we go get a #2 guy, then Robinson can fight for the slot, but that leaves us where we were, to a point, unless the vet is also going ot play that slot role.

Ernest Wilford's a guy to put out there. Stokley's re-signed.
