The sad part is the oil change places get paid twice. Once from you for the oil change and then when they sell the used oil. I bet the second is where the real money is.

They try to sell me services that I do not need or want when I go there but I am smart enough to refuse them. If they are not actually changing my oil then that would be bad but I think most of them are at least honest enough to not do that.

no, the sad part is the people whose engines seize up because they forgot put the oil in, or short-quarted you and made a few bucks off the quarts they didn't use, or re-used old oil, or better yet, did nothing at all. it all happens, so why not do it yourself and know its right. don't get me started on those places and taking advantage of women either. damn crooks.

oil change, tire rotation, plugs, wires, battery, wipers, air filters, head/tail lights, signal bulbs...I usually do myself.

taking them to a shop because I was feeling lazy this time, reminds me why I do it myself.

stay away from dealerships too...go in for a $20 oil change and walk out with a new car. It's happened to me. :deal2:

Solution. Don't go to the express places. I avoid them like the plague. Go to a trusted mechanic.

they can be the same. just means they've been fooling someone for years and earned their trust. of course, i'm painting a broad stroke, not everyone is a rip-off artist, but it happens too many times. unless you have a relative or close friendwho is a mechanic, chances are you've been fucked over.

I watch them sometimes at the quickie lube places. You can see them put the nozzle in and hear the new oil pumping in.

I'm sure that happens some places. I actually like to stand in the garage and watch the mechanic change the oil, etc... Besides, if he screwed people, bad word of mouth would eventually close him down.
