Seriously, I think my single 7950 GT is faster than that setup.

A lot of games still aren't using the SLI to it's full extent. I have recently patched some that do take advantage of it and you can tell a big difference in before and after. Best to keep the nvidia drivers patched too. My system is well over two years old and when I got it the 6600s were the most recent releases from Nvidia. I've not overclocked them at all either but I have tweaked them a bit. The latest driver patches gave me a whole lot more flexibility in that area.

There can really be quite a big difference in video cards built on the same chip from different manufacturers too. Some come way over clocked from the factory and are designed to handle the chip being over clocked while others aren't and can't. Best to read the reviews and check out the benchmark tests.

    My rankings:

    8800GTS 640mb if you have a 24" hi-res monitor (1920x1200 is rough on games) - $320
    8800GTS 320mb or ATI X1950XT for high-end but lower-res (1600 or less) - $250
    7950GT or ATI X1950Pro for <$200 cards - $160-190
    8600GT at the low-end but still good - $100-140
