Maybe Bob Johsnon can start his own radio station for the Bobcats.

What about the new station that Danny Fontana started? They are building a 25,000 watt tower in Charlotte right now. It's going to be all talk. Compete directly with WBT.

They are building a three tower directional antenna just south of Dallas. They will be 25 KW during the daytime but they will only be 106 Watts at night when most Bobcats games are played...

Here is a look at their nighttime coverage map...

Wow, I thought they were going to be stronger than that.

would it even be worth the cost of broadcasting at night for them?

Surprising. My wife almost took a job there. They were serious about taking on WBT head on...with that kind of coverage, they have no shot.

Well...most stations are automated at night so they wouldn't have to pay someone to be there. New solid state transmitters don't use as much power as the old tube type rigs...A 25,000 Watt transmitter probably uses more than 106 Watts in stand by mode...

Remember that map is nighttime...here is their daytime map...

My problem is their lack of nighttime coverage of Kings Mt. If I were in charge at the FCC I would make them run their current transmitter in Kings Mt at night...

The National Association of Broadcasters has asked the FCC to consider allow some AM stations with limited nighttime power to operate a FM Translator. WKMT I would think qualify if that were to happen. I don't know if you would be able to hear it all over Charlotte but it would be a help...

Actually, an article that was in the Observer in '05 had a quote from Danny Fontana with regards to competing "head-to-head" with WBT. It reads, "I think if we were foolish enough to do that, we'd lose," he said. "WBT is the colossus of the South. It's not my intention to be their competition. We want to offer an alternative."

I used to listen to Fontana when he was on mornings there with a cohost a few years ago. It made for interesting radio back then, and I'm sure his new station will offer a good alternative to the standard fare airing at his old employer.

That would be a good coverage area for another Charlotte Sports Talk Statioin . . . Is it too late to convince station managment to switch station formats :D :D ? ? ?

I remember reading that. I also know the people involved...they are entering the exact same demo and want to try to capture as much of the WBT audience as possible. This is what they told my wife as well.
