no , but I hate the gwc, especially on a plate track. as I said earlier I wanted the 24 to win because I knew the can shower was coming. Jr fans would probably have thrown cans if he won...

Nascar officials could fuck up a wet dream. Did they forget to put a red flag in the flagstand or something?

Those idiots throw beer cans at a car that is designed to wreck at 200 mph.

I always thought Earnhardt fans hated Gordon so much because he was becoming a threat to Earnhardt's success, and therefore their standing as fans as such.

All that is silly of course. Did Petty fans act that way as Earnhardt kept winning and winning?

The most beer cans and bottles I've ever seen thrown at a race track was at Charlotte back in the middle 70's just before a Waylon Jennings concert which was right after qualifying. This is when qualifying was around 1:00 pm. The crowd got restless (it was hot) waiting on the concert to start (Waylon was running late) A lot of fights broke out in the stands, people started climbing the fences, and throwing cans and bottles down into the infield where the drivers families and other VIP's were waiting to see the concert. It got ugly. Anyone else remember this, or were there?

they've been throwing beer cans a drivers for years. hell, i saw sterling marlin get bombed at bristol nearly 20 years ago. nobody said a fucking thing. the thing now is that nascar has tons more exposure. they want to branch out, ditch the redneck image, draw a newer, richer fan base. make more money. first to go was our local tracks. next will be the coolers. a few more bombings and they'll do it. i've already heard the outcry from sports talk radio guys who dont know a fucking thing about the sport. and i'll bet you anything those pussies that are running the show nowadays will cowtow to the pressure.

Yep. A sport I used to love is becoming corporatized bullshit. I want to watch racers race not PR guys in firesuits.

I think it was Math that brought up Petty fans. Petty fans didn't bitch much about Earnhardt but he caught a lot of hell back in the day. Waltrip was the main target. DW probably holds the record for getting pelted with beer cans and chicken bones. He even announced one time in victory lane that he'd meet any fan that wanted to fight at the local KMart parking lot.

I'm sorry so many folks don't get why Dale Earnhardt meant so much to us linthead mill kids and for those that don't get it an keep belittling it, I second Chuck Richey's sentiment: Fuck you.

agree there. Once Busch became a big deal and multi car teams were a big deal, it stopped being interesting. Having Petty, the Alabama boys, the old guard in the game mattered. Even the JD McDuffies and Dave Marcis' of the league added something.

I get why Dale Earnhardt was important. I grew up liking him and never watched more than a few laps after he died, though I stopped liking the sport a few years before that anyway.

I don't get why it's so important that Gordon broke this non-record, since it's not a record, and it's not the measure of what Earnhardt was about.
