Ok, I need a new mower and don't know what to get. I have a sloped yard with some very steep hills. I currently have a front wheel drive self-propelled, but it is about worthless. A neighbor uses one that is also front wheel drive, but has those big rear wheels, and says that works fine for him (his yard is also sloped, but not as much as mine). The salesperson at Lowe's said I should get a rear wheel drive self-propelled, but when I asked about what the big wheels on the back do, they had no clue.

So, what would you all recommend? Rear wheel drive with smaller back wheels, front wheel drive with big back wheels, or something else?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

The rear wheel drive mowers are a nightmare to turn. I'd go with the front wheel drive with the large rear wheels. And be sure to get a side discharge model. You don't want a rear discharge that requires bagging. Some have both rear and side which would be fine. I would choose a crafstman over the lowes brand if you want a mower that will last you for many years.

That's exactly what I have and would recommend. My mower has side and rear discharge. I like the bagging feature for leaves, etc. Oh, be sure not to run over any tree stumps. NOT GOOD.

Honda. Dual Cut. Very happy with mine. I don't pick up I mulch. Best mulching mower I have ever had. 1 yr later still starts on the first pull.

The honda is a great mower but very pricey for a walk behind mower. I tried one out but the slow speed was to slow for me and the high speed made me run. The motors are sweet though but if you mulch you have to change or clean the air filter often or the mower begins to flood and run rough. Craftsman sells a self propelled mower with about the same features as the honda including the honda motor for hundreds less than a honda. In the 2006 consumer reports buying guide it was labeled a BEST BUY.

Thanks, some of the research I did said the rear wheel drive gets better traction and is good for slopes, and the large rear wheel gives better maneuverability on uneven surfaces (whatever that means), but nowhere did it say anything about turning the rear wheel drives. So I never even considered that point.

I was looking at a Toro RWD with a Honda engine, but now I will also check out the craftsman.

The "front wheel drive" push mowers are nice for slopes. However, I try to use grass cutting time for some exercise and find myself not useing the extra help most of the time. Now, when it gets to be 95 degrees outside, that's another story.

I haven't change my airfilter yet and it still runs smooth.
