No. He also had a disappointing Senior Bowl. He was not accurate with his long passes. I think we have to get a real good pick with that second rounder, and I have too many questions about him.

Now if he's there in the 3rd, yes. He may be. Some are projecting him there now, on the basis of the Senior Bowl.

    Agree with Collin on Palmer.

When you're not willing to explain what you mean with a vague, seemingly meaningless phrase then it becomes even more clear that you weren't really meaning anything. There isn't anything about his mechanics that is "over exaggerated" and he absolutely does not look "like he is posing for pictures." His delivery is a little mechanical, but it's short and quick, just like you prefer it to be.

I actually agree with you there, but we're not talking about dumping Jake immediately if we can draft Smith. He gives us an option who could potentially be ready by 2008, although probably 2009, but who would at least give us someone capable of stepping in and producing immediately if needed. Plus it gives us someone even better than our current option a couple of years down the line. Sitting guys is what you do with QBs, so your only valid objection is if you insist that we should never draft a QB since they wouldn't be prepared to play right away. Basically I'm not saying that we have to draft Smith if he's there, I'm just saying that he would be a good selection if there isn't someone else we like better. Him sitting a while shouldn't be a deterrent.

Awesome that you noticed this because it's one of the things I love about Smith. PA can be so effective on a run-heavy team like ours, but more than that I think it just shows how much attention Smith pays to the little things. He is meticulous about working and getting down all the aspects of the position. He reminds me of Peyton Manning in that respect.

And I'm with you on Palmer. I think Thelt just likes him because of the name, which is ok because it's unreasonable to expect everyone to know every prospect, but I'm really not high on the guy. I'm fine with choosing Posluszny or Buster Davis or Merriweather or maybe Griffin, etc over Troy Smith, but if we don't like any other players more then he would be a good choice at that spot. He has a real future in the NFL in my opinion.

I think if you are going to draft a guy and let him sit for two years you are better off getting a guy later in the draft. A second round pick is hard to spend on a guy with little or no immediate impact. I do agree though that if he is clearly the highest rated player on the board that you should probably take him.

Dude, I have tried and tried and tried to explain to you why you're wrong about this. You can't just get a good QB prospect in the later rounds. You cannot. Sometimes a team will luck into someone in the 4th to 7th rounds, but when you take a QB that late they are almost always Fasanis. It's fine to say that you prefer Player A over Troy Smith, but it's nonsense to say that we shouldn't ever draft a QB in the 2nd round since they'll have to sit because almost all QBs need to sit their first couple of years (whether they're forced into action or not).
Have you taken a peek at our 2nd round choices lately? Richard Marshall was a steal, but he's the first good pick we've gotten in the second round since Kris Jenkins. You don't need to get production right away from your second round pick to be a good team. You just flat out do not.

Everyone knew Jason White couldn't cut it because of physical limitations, Eric Crouch wasn't an NFL QB, Chris Weinke was too old and limited, Wuerffel was a system quarterback, Charlie Ward never got an opportunity, Toretta didn't deserve to win, while Detmer and Ware were two more system quarterbacks. Of those guys, only Andre Ware was even expected to become something in the NFL, so it's not fair to dismiss Troy Smith because he happend to win the award.

I said pretty much the same thing about Vince Young, FWIW, and I admitted that I was wrong there.

Vince Young was such a different player than Troy Smith that they shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence. About the only thing they have in common is that they're both black. And for what it's worth, Young is currently as overrated as Vick was. He was the worst passer in the NFL this past season.
