What's up with Colbert and Carter? Not much
Remember back when the Panthers signed Keyshawn Johnson and all the talk was about how much deeper the team would be at wide receiver?

Well, they are a bit deeper than last year. Johnson at least gives them one legitimate option after Steve Smith. But the Panthers clearly have become a two-receiver team.

Keary Colbert and Drew Carter have combined for zero catches since the Oct. 15 game against Baltimore. Colbert, who was supposedly hampered by an ankle injury when he was a starter last year, has taken a step back. He has five catches for the season.

Yet, Colbert’s still been working as the third receiver the last two weeks as Carter, who has 15 catches, has completely disappeared.

That means it’s imperative Johnson and Smith stay healthy for the rest of the season. It’s also imperative the Panthers get a quality receiver for next season in the draft or free agency.

i have certainly noticed this. i don't think he is getting as many snaps the past few games. hell, the only ball i can remember going his way was Jake's pick against tampa.

i like what he brings...and he made some nice plays in the first 6 games of the season. but maybe he is just not getting open anymore. can anyone who has broken down film comment on that?

I don't know if I should be disgusted or proud that PaulPaladin's comment was so, so much more insightful, correct, and interesting than the blog post from Yasinskas. Seriously, what happened to that guy? I used to respect his opinions because it appeared that he knew something about football. Has he had another kid or something else in his personal life to take attention away from the field? Whatever it is, he doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground anymore. For the record, I'm objecting to the idea that it's "imperative the Panthers get a quality receiver for next season in the draft or free agency." As PPaladin noted, we're just a two receiver offense and a lack of catches isn't necessarily an indictment of Carter.

Follow up topic, probably needs a new thread: Is the above condition the offense or the quarterback? I am NOT one of the Jake Haters. But I've always thought he was a one, maybe two read guy. He gets the play, goes the line, looks at the D, maybe changes the play, watches the S or whatever his read is at the snap, and most of the time knows where he's going with the ball. Occassionally he'll back off his initial read and go somewhere else (usually a checkdown to the back).

Am I the only one that sees the panic in his body language when his initial read turns out to be wrong/covered and he needs another place to go with the ball?

To be fair, most NFL QBs are 2-read QBs at best. It is the rare QB like Manning, or Brady, or Marino that can consistently pull off 3-read completions.

    3-reads = Surgeon

The only case history on this is going back to Peete (who fed Moose a ton) or back to the Jets days (2000 was Henning's offense, feeding a ton to Richie Anderson and Curtis Martin in the passing game to offset the loss of Keyshawn Johnson, in what wasn't actually Henning's offense, but what resembled less of Henning's O than the 1998-99 Weis-run offense). I think it's clear that Jake's going to go with one of the first options, and generally Henning will not give you 4 or 5 options unless it's 5 WR, which is why I believe our offense really springs to life with 3 wide looks (though the trend doesn't show as much as in the ultra-conservative 2003).

Long way of saying that I believe it's a combo of the two things - I've seen Jake stare, I've seen how effective pump fakes can be in this O, and I've seen us try too fucking many PA passes out of 2 TE, and only 2 receivers in patterns. I'd love to see Carter more, but that Colbert (awful as he's been) has gotten some PT over him suggests there might be an issue with him in play or in health.

Jake stares, but that didn't stop him from looking for Proehl when he was the designed receiver. Really it's just a matter of us not running 3 wide very often since it necessitates removing a TE or FB.

Well come to think of it I have James Anderson one as well and where the hell is he? Man, if that is all it takes I think I am going to air ship a couple to Drew Brees and Reggie Bush...

In reading this thread about the draft and stuff about Jake, I was thinking today about where Phil Simms would go and Leftwich (assuming that they are gone) and there arent many teams that are in need of a QB immediately and doesn't have a future one, other than OAK. Could QB be a value for the Panthers in the late first, and if so, do we bite? We'll need to look another direction in the next 3-4 years I believe and they would be seasoned by that time. Theres a lot of IFs in this thread and the thought process for this decision, but interesting.
