According to this data the Panthers are huge favorites to win this weekend against the Saints.

10/01 1:00 PM ET WSEX Pinnacle Bodog BetWWTS SIA 5Dimes
    New Orleans
    Carolina -7.5 -7.5 -7.5 -7.5 off -7.5

I'm surprised the line is so high.

The purpose of the line is to equalize the action. The oddsmaker does not handicap the event itself.

Basically the oddsmaker is not expressing a belief that Carolina will win by 7.5, but rather that he believes that line is most likely to create relatively equal numbers of people betting for and against Carolina. I do expect that the line will go down before Sunday, as that seems high to me as well.

I don't understand why the panthers would be favored at all -

Despite whatever more broad criteria they may base point spreads on there seem to be some glaring mismatches currently -

Since we've had troubles with illusive backs like Warrick Dunn and Julius Jones how are our guys expected to stop the quicker and speedier Bush? As if the history of difficulty we have with Deuce wouldn’t be bad enough
Brees is the kind of passer that can hurt us . . . accurate and smart
One of the saints clearest team strengths is currently our most glaring weakness . . . Their DEs vs. our T’s
The Saints DBs made a receiving corps that looked good against us look bad . . . or was it jus bad refs & voodoo
Their LBs looked a lot more disciplined than ours have looked so far
The saints special teams play looked pretty damn good . . . Our special teams = pretty damn bad (except of course for our kickers)
Peyton is proving to be an outstanding coach so far and our guys seem to come up short vs. “outstanding” anything, especially coaching

its called a letdown and trends. you wont ever see a better example of a letdown week. NO is coming off a huge emotional week. Panthers have SS back and should be better than last week.

Last year NO came in to Car and won on a huge emotional game for them. what happened the next week? They got dusted by 2+ td's.

Heavy on the bad refs. Saints PI was allowed all night.

I listened to a NO radio station for a while yesterday. people were calling that game the biggest win in Saints history. they are so emotionally right now. people think they are going to the superbowl in Miami. even though they have beat the Panthers as of late, I always liked our chances with Brooks at QB. Brees isnt going to do the bonehead things Brooks did. 3-0 is great, but I remember the Panthers were 3-0 with Peete, and missed the playoffs. Panthers win this weekend.

They've also got Reggie Bush. We can win the game if our defense comes to play. If we have to outscore them, we may be in trouble. I know we have to score MORE points (duh) but if we have to score a LOT of points we are probably in trouble.
