Who on this board is Darrin Gantt??????? He took one of my comments in one of the threads on here and put it in his story. (The bolded part was my comment.)

    Just what was he thinking?

CHARLOTTE -- Sometimes smart people do dumb things.
How they respond and adapt defines them much more than the original act of stupidity.

By all accounts, John Fox is a pretty good football coach. Widely respected throughout the league, he resuscitated a dying franchise four and half years ago, and has put the Carolina Panthers in a position where an 0-2 start brings a panic based on high expectations rather than the resignation of heading for another listless year.

If the Panthers weren't so good, they wouldn't be so maddening right now.

Same goes for Fox, which is why Sunday's vapor-lock leaves everyone wide-eyed and wondering what in the world he was thinking, or if he was at all.

You can't understate how bad a call it was. They're asking for a recount on his Wonderlic as we speak.

A punt return-throwback is a risky proposition at best, and tying a land mine to your shoe at worst. In terms of gambling, Fox is more of a red-black guy at the roulette wheel. Anything under 50-50 is way too chancy. Making that call Sunday in Minnesota was spending the rent money at the gas station on a Powerball ticket.

It was a strange decision at a strange time, a play with a strange set of personnel on which to base your hopes. That it was signed off on by a guy who has probably considered punting on third down makes it all the more strange.

Yet, as dumb as it was, it won't be the thing they carve in Fox's tombstone. The man has done enough to get a pass on stupid every now and then.

And by all accounts, he's beating himself up over this one pretty good. Frankly, he should. He began the self-flagellation Sunday, and stepped back in for more the following day, lashing himself for things he should be blamed for only in the most extrapolated sense.

But Tuesday was a work day, meaning the time for introspection and self-abuse has ended.

After all, he's the guy who declared the 24-hour rule around here, dictating the length of time devoted to celebrating or sulking over any particular game.

That means he was thinking Tampa Bay on Tuesday, trying to figure out how to keep the Bucs from adding to the 66 yards they've rushed for in two games.

Despite the desperate nature of this week, there's still hope for the Panthers' season, particularly if Steve Smith returns to the field soon. Even without him, their defense was stout enough before taking the fourth-quarter gut-punch that they deserved to get a win.

And that defense remains good enough to keep them in games while the offense finds its legs (actually, hamstrings). Until Smith's back to his old self, they're going to have to win games 2002-style, by beating teams down on defense to the point that the understaffed other side can do just enough.

They've still got time to turn things around. After getting drilled by Atlanta, Ken Lucas suggested they could still go 15-1. Also dumb. But even at 14-2, they'd still make the playoffs.

That won't be completely necessary, but they're going to have to fix things quickly.

Since 1990, 17 teams have started 0-2 and made the playoffs. The 2001 Patriots won a Super Bowl that way. So there's still a chance.

Over the same span, however, only three teams have recovered from an 0-3 start to make the postseason. That's roughly the same odds of patting Chris Gamble on the shoulder pads and telling him to give it another shot.

And before we move on, it bears repeating one last time.

    That was dumb.

Moving forward, we'll find out how smart Fox actually is.

I thought his wonderlic was 9. Wouldn't take long to recount that. Seems to me that comment should've been used on someone with a high score that did something stupid.
