so i have a laptop on my coffee table and my 10month old son like to push the buttons and pull on the mouse and generally play with the thing. he must have done something to it when i wasn't around cuz i found this weird toolbar thing on the left side of the screen. the normal toolbar was in place, but this one was displaying the contents of a folder i had on the desktop. i have never seen this before. i could drag the right side of it and my desktop slid over to make more room. i could tell it to autohide and i could add other stuff to it. i turned off the display of the directory it was showing and it went away and i have no idea how to get it back.

i'm really more curious than anything. what is this and how did it appear? i've been using windows for probably 10 years and i don't think i've ever seen this before.

    It was a coolbar toolbar

Right Click on the Taskbar, in a blank area (where the X is)
    Choose Toolbars
You can make a new Toolbar or a folder to open.

A shortcut can be placed on the CoolBar by holding the CTRL Key and dragging an icon from your desktop. Almost all the icons can be added to the Coolbar. The last item on this coolbar (before the clock) opens a folder on the harddrive-

    Hope that helps!

Um... no... that's spyware on your system

What his son did was simply undock a quick launch toolbar from histaskbar. and drag it to the side of the screen so it would dock.

Its like this... Unlock the taskbar... right click on the taskbar and go to the Toolbars option. Now select Desktop. Now take the mouse and drag the toolbar that's just been added on the taskbar on to the dektop. Now you've got a tool box that can be docked up top or on the side. If you dock it you can set it to be hidden.

that seems to be what he did. somehow he right clicked in the blank area of the toolbar, selected "new toolbar..." from the "toolbar submenu" which brings up a browser that defaults to the desktop. he selected the folder that resides on the desktop and thus added it to the toolbar. then he selected it again and dragged it to the left hand border of the desktop.

how he managed this by simply grabbing and randomly hitting buttons is beyond me.

there may be some meta key combos that automatically skip some parts of this, but dang...

and brain, i don't see how you explained it any different than what kegtapper said, aside from the icon dragging...
