Lightning ran in on my line and fried my ethernet high speed network card on Friday night, so the rest of the computer works fine, but I need a new card as I can't connect to the internet. The one that came with the computer is attached to the motherboard, but according to tech support, there are expansion slots for an additional card so I don't have to buy a whole new motherboard, but how do I attach the card to the motherboard? They would not tell me this since my computer was no longer under warranty. Hardware installation is not my specialty, so I just need to know how complicated this is, and about how much the card and anything else I will need to fix this will cost. The card I need is an VIA high speed ethernet network adapter, or that's what it's called in device manager. I can't find the damn card online. Is there something else it might be called, or that would work? The ethernet cable is fine, and the modem is fine, I tested the modem with my ISP provider, and it is receiving all the data, so it has to be the card. I am on high speed cable internet.TIA.

it's not hard at all. Take the cover off, pop off the piece that would protect that particular expansion slot, seat the card, and so on, the instructions will be on it.

and you just need any old ethernet card - no need to try to locate whatever chipset was on your motherboard. It'll take you all of 5 seconds to install it.

Short and sweet - 100mb/s ethernet, PCI connector. You can validate that you have PCI connectors by opening the case and looking at the big row of connectors - how long is each connector? Maybe take a picture and post it here...

Buying and opening a bottle of aspirin is about the same price and difficulty.

and we'll be here to help.

This was the first piece of hardware I ever installed in anything. It was no time at all, and I knew nothing about any of this when I did it.

$10? I'd not pay more than this, if you shop around at the right place (i.e., not BestBuy) you could find it cheaper.
