The guy said i couldn't use the MS office pro software i bought last year on a new computer so i'd have to buy a new one at $325.

Is that right? and is this a good deal? or is there anything I should change?

I dont know you, but Im guessing that is WAY too much machine for you. He's also charging you close to retail for every piece in there.

As long as you still have the install disk, he's full of crap.

It sounds like you are being taken.

Im probably gonna sell my AMD/nForce3 baased box for a fraction of that.

the guy recommended this because in the near future I'm going to be sending 3D optical scans over the internet and will need to save those images on my computer. Is that still too much computer?

so, I can install the same software on a new computer - that's good to know.

Thanks Harry, please forgive my ignorance but how good and how much is a AMD/nForce3 baased box? And where can I get a computer that is not full retail?

For that no... its a bit of a hefty price, but may be needed. for optical scans I'd also consider a better video card, but that might add another $200-300. At the very least see if you can bump the video card from 128 Meg to 256 or 512... If you get the new version of windows next year you'll need the extra video memory.

MAYBE... Office XP and 2003 can be installed on 2 computers. After the second it tries to get you to register all funky... If you aren't gonna be using it on the old PC anymore register via phone and tell the microsoft people you're removing it from you old machine and installing it on the new because your old was hit by lightning, and assure her you won't be using it on that one any longer.

For scans, you just need a big hard drive unless you are editing them or displaying them.

There are anumber of high memory video cards for sale on NewEgg for under $150.

I still think $1250 is too much for a PC for anyone but a computer graphics professional or a gamer.

That's where I got mine... it cost about $200 for a 512 Geforce 6800... there was a sale at the time and a rebate, but I'm damn happy with it.

Actually, he's probably correct legally. OEM licenses are tied to the machine they are bought with, legally they can't be moved.

Your machine is a fraction of the machine that guy is selling...

You're not getting ripped off with that machine, but you can likely do better just buying a Dell. He's being legal with the software, which jacks the price.
