Why would you throw in Shelton's name in the whole RB depth argument? Second rounder or not, the guy went on IR for what amounted to a cracked toe nail.

I don't trust Shelton until I see him play. And from the little that we have seen, it's been pedestrian.

    Brady
    Bulger
    Delhomme
    Brunell
    Hasselbeck
    Warner
    B. Johnson
    Rypien

There's eight. Six have been to a Super Bowl. Four have a ring.

I mean, I understand in the grand scheme of things, you're better off going 1st-3rd. But to say that it "rarely happens" is not entirely accurate. In fact, it happens almost once every two years or so. If that is your criteria for "almost never", then you're dead on.

I know you dig him. I just dont see him as a much, much better QB or anyone worth falling in love with, enough to suggest we waste a first day pick on a guy we just outright don't need to have here.

It's not dumb. QB is not a need.

You proposed a view on this. And, of course, we didn't really need another WR going into last year, either. No, I honestly don't believe we have more than most teams, Goings figured in or not. We honestly have as many question marks as last year, without the wildcard of Davis added in.

yeah, and if he'd have been one spot lower that'd changed every one's picks.

That's just a top 300, not a draft order, so it is conceivable that he would be there for us.

the idea of the mock is that it is a theoretical draft order up to the choice you're making. That's why you use a ranking, and not a mock or simply pull something out of thin air like "I really think Matt Leinart will be there when we pick at the end of 4."

Actually it's six. Delhomme and Warner weren't drafted, and we're talking about QBs were are selected in the draft. And yes, there have been some guys who develop into great quarterbacks from that low in the draft, but I didn't say you never get someone worth a damn after the 4th round. I said that it rarely happens, and that's true. In the last ten years, 64 quarterbacks have been selected in the fifth round or later. You found 3 (Johnson, Brunell, and Rypien were taken before that) that were worth something. Meanwhile 59 quarterbacks were taken in the first four rounds during that same period, and their success rate is significantly higher. Or if you want to look at the last twenty years to include your other three QBs, that's 6 out of 148 quarterbacks selected in the fifth round or later.

And to be perfectly clear in case you had trouble understanding the point:
Selecting a QB in rounds 5-7 is pretty much wasting the selection. You can do much better by going after a project RB, OL, DL, or LB. If you're looking for a QB to develop, your best bet is to get someone in rounds 2-4.

I also find it amusing that you bitched constantly about having to read what I have to say, made a big fuss about how you put me on ignore, and now continue to read what I say and respond to it. Honestly I hoped I would never have the displeasure of trying to explain things to you again.

It was mind-bogglingly stupid to say that "a pick before the 5th for a 3rd string QB is too much." Teams regularly select their developmental QBs before the 5th and stash those players as the 3rd QB for at least the first season and sometimes more than that. You certainly know that, which is why stating the opposite was so obviously dumb.
You don't have to believe, but I already proved you wrong about that. Many teams have a second or so round choice as their backup, and many other teams also have a journeyman who has demonstrated the ability to carry for 500+ yards in a season at least once. Very few teams have both. We do.

So to explain this in terms you can understand as well:
#1) Selecting a #3 QB is no less reasonable than selecting a #4 RB.

#2) We could use a better (whether you mean dependable or productive) starting RB. Getting one in the first round would be a solid choice. We do not need to add someone just for the sake of depth. We are deeper at RB than several of our other positions (LB, CB, S).

I know we *shouldn't* need depth there, but when I look at our last two seasons....
