Jets | Rumor alert: NFL Draft trade
    Tue, 25 Apr 2006 08:46:30 -0700

Rich Cimini, of the New York Daily News, reports one rumor making the rounds has the New York Jets (No. 4) swapping their first-round pick with the Oakland Raiders (No. 7), who want a quarterback. The Jets then select Oregon DT Haloti Ngata with the seventh pick. The Jets don't have a pure nose tackle for their new 3-4 scheme.

It would be unpopular, certainly, but I think it makes a lot of sense for New York.

I don't get drafting a NT 7th overall, but it's a good trade for both. I guess it's easier to swallow if Ngata was a 3-4 end, and it's not as if you have to have journeyman crap at 3-4 DL.
If it went down, Oakland would certainly be an interesting case just to see which QB they take. You have to assume Leinart if he's there, but it's Oakland.

3-4 NT is more important than 3-4 DE. You can stick just about any generic defensive lineman at 3-4 DE, but the NT has to have specific, fairly rare physical attributes. That's why guys like Ferguson and Kemoeatu were coveted by so many teams.

I am not sure I would draft Nagata that high but trading down probably does make sense for the Jets. They have a lot of holes to fill, of course so do the Raiders....

he was long rumored for Buffalo, and I didn't think that was too high. Then again, often a player's rating will be skewed by people trying to fit that to where he'll go, which IMO just isn't logical.

Despite whispers out of Raiderland that Leinart is the next Ken Stabler, everything I'm hearing and reading says big Al is in lust with Vince Young.

I would not take Young until late first round maybe second. He is just too much of an enigma. He has the highest bust potential of anyone rated in the top 15 IMHO. Very atheletic QBs who are raw would not get drafted very high if it were up to me.

I just got through hearing on ESPN or somewhere that Al Davis had almost no contact with Young, which is supposedly strange because he's usually very hands-on with guys that he likes and generally shows more interest than the almost apathy he has shown towards Young. That was from someone who covers the team, whereas I think most of the reports about Davis loving Young aren't based off of observation, but just stereotypes about Davis' preferences.

Piss on popularity...it's worth the paper you wipe your ass with.

Jets fans are going to be malcontent, no matter who they choose. Same with Eagle fans. They've almost become a parody of themselves. And, yes, the Jets should trade down to 7, if Oakland offers.
