The Carolina Panthers have signed free agent outside linebacker Na'il Diggs. The veteran out of Ohio State spent his first six NFL seasons with the Green Bay Packers.

He was drafted in the fourth round of the 2000 draft. The 6-foot-4, 240-pounder played in 84 games, including 80 as a starter, and recorded 541 tackles (390 solo). He struggled with injuries last season, and played in nine games for Green Bay.

that makes 7 OLBs on the roster now. We'll in all likelyhood only carry 4. Looks like they may be setting up to go with Davis, Seward, Adams, and Diggs unless a draft pick supplants one of them and shift Draft inside to backup Morgan. Bye-bye Choo-Choo. Then there's the option of keeping Davis at S which at the moment I can't see doing.

Looking at the roster we now have at least two good (to serviceable) options at each LB spot. So is a LB at 27 still the best pick? Before Adams and Diggs signed I would have sworn that every other team in the NFL would have anticipated the Panthers to draft LB in the 1st.
Though Williams will probably prove to be a McCree or better pick up McCadam is just a scrub and there is still a void at Safety. However, what SS prospect is right for #27 . . . I don't see one.
All things considered it's really starting to look like RB might be the best value for us in the first (TE IF Henning wasn't in the picture).

    SLB

    Diggs/Seward

    MLB

    Morgan/Draft

    WLB

    Davis/Adams

We've got some depth. Plus Seward and Draft can rotate to either MLB or SLB, and Adams or Davis can go strong situationally.

I can get down with this.

Take OLB off our draft needs list. And yeah, goodbye Choo-choo and Tufts.

No, unless he also happens to be BPA. My first reaction to this move is thinking that we will definitely move up in the first round for whatever RB we happen to prefer, because we may not have roster space for that many draftees anyway.

Yep. And it would have to be a clear BPA, and I don't know if that is true for any of the OLBs.

It's either a back, which we may trade up for, or reach for a safety in my mind.

Does anyone want to post a current vacancies vs acquisitions list? How many perceived open slots might be up for grabs?

I've wondered for a while now if all the free agent activity might mean we were trading up. It's starting to look more and more likely.

The question might be just how high we're willing to go.
