Colts | Team may not offer Thornton a contract before he hits the open market
    Thu, 9 Mar 2006 16:10:06 -0800

Hank Lowenkron, of the Associated Press, reports Indianapolis Colts team president Bill Polian said Thursday, March 9, said he didn't anticipate making an offer to LB David Thornton before he gets the opportunity to test the free-agent market. "My gut reaction is I want to see which way the market goes before we entertain any major expenditures beyond those we have already made," said Polian.

I think Thornton is a better WLB than 'Spoon, but he was forced to play out of position at SLB last year and struggled mightily. If for some reason we don't re-sign WW and want to keep Thomas Davis at SS, then Thornton would be a really nice pick-up since he'll get a lot less than he would have after the '04 season.

Your not being a homer if the kid has actual talent.

Id be happy with a Spoon for Thornton swap.

I wasn't sure whether you were questioning my statement that Thornton struggled at SLB (which he did), or the assumption that we wouldn't play both Thornton and Thomas Davis at linebacker (in which case we'd be absurdly small - Thornton is listed at 230 but is really 220). But yeah, I firmly believing that using Thomas Davis at SLB would be utterly stupid. It would make his weaknesses more prominent and limit his strengths.

Right after the draft that year David Thorton helped with out Koren's camp. David said that the Panthers were really high on him and told him that they would probally take him but, they took spoon instead. David had no hard feelings about but, even then he was disappointed because he really wanted to play at home. I would bet he would still love to play at home.

Nonetheless, I'd figure it a stronger option than SS for this team, with Witherspoon or another WLB here, if that were to happen, so liking it or not it would still bear repeating as an option since the team has mentioned the possibility.

I concede that it's a general possibility, but I think getting someone as small as Thornton to start opposite him would make it that much more unlikely.
