Does anyone know where I can take a cellphone (Motorola razr V3 purchased at Cingular) in Charlotte and have it unlocked?

    Thanks very much.

    What is unlocking?
Many cellular service providers will provide phones at a discounted price when bought with a contract. However, many of these phones are "locked" to the network from which you purchased the phone; this means that you can't use the phone with any other network provider's SIM card (it will give a "Enter Subsidy Password" or similar message). Unlocking your phone removes this barrier and allows you to use your phone on all the networks it is compatible with. Unlocking increases the resale value of your phone and allows you the flexibility of using alternative network providers - this is particularly useful if you wish to avoid roaming charges while traveling abroad.

"The great place called the internet" has served up (1) an over-the-air unlocking code that doesn't work from one website and (2) drivers that won't load from another. So far, the internet's been precisely as helpful as your reply. That's why I'm looking for a place to which I can take it.

I've unlocked four phones online, all Motorolas, no problems. Must be you.
