Common thread seems to be one of the top 3 TE's, which I think I have seen as a consistent mock pick for us over the last three years. I still don't see it happeneing the way we have used the TE, but if Hennig is willing to change things up a little it would be a good year to grab one.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry about this. The guy is a moron both because he thinks Wharton was awful this season and because he thinks Winston is worth anything near a first-rounder. As for the rest, Maroney is a possibility but he's really skinny for our system ([SIZE=-1]5-11, 205), Lewis won't get picked because he can't block, and Vernon Davis won't get anywhere near our selection.

It's not often you see a blocking TE go in the first round, most are productive in the passing game and lacking elswhere. Winston is listed anywhere from 11 or so to the mid 20's, he's deserving IMO...but there are better that should go ahead of him that seem to be slipping in behind him at this point.
ANy back we get in the first would likely require Hennings to change things up considerably from his current pound it philosophy. And really, they already have a little with the change from Davis to Foster...but yes, LM is smaller than you'd like to see in this system. Many are oooing and ahhing over Williams, but he would require the offense to be altered as well.
One of these guys teamed with a Brandon Jacobs or even Shelton if he starts getting low would suffice.

True, but Davis is good all-around and Pope at least has the potential. On the plus side, I think GBN reported that Lewis actually had the best blocking week for the tight ends at the Senior Bowl. I just don't think he's done enough there over the body of his career for him to be attractive to the Panthers.
How many Miami games did you watch this season? I realize that projecting college athletes is highly subjective, but while Winston has all the technical qualities, he is lacking in both strength and agility. He was outright abused in most of Miami's games this season. Maybe some people still hold out hope that he'll gain some of the lateral movement he lost with that knee injury, but I think he's toast. He would be a significant downgrade from Wharton in my opinion, because if you're getting highlighted by college DEs, you're going to get an NFL quarterback killed. Right now I think people are mocking him that high because his name has been mentioned, but Kiper and the people with actual NFL sources all seem to be saying that he's falling like a rock. If he goes in the first round, I will be shocked. In fact, I expect him to fall into the third.
Huh? Williams would be perfect for the current offense as long as he cuts down a bit on his inclination to bounce things out. He's a tough inside runner with good vision and burst.

I just think a guy like Williams would get used up pretty quickly in this system.

I think Williams would have the most longevity in this system of anyone available in the draft. Even LenDale White has had some injury issues, and on far fewer carries than Williams. Those two are the only ones who seem clearly built well enough to carry the full load in a power running system, and Williams has demonstrated that he can sustain a high number of carries and doesn't seem to take as many big hits. Regardless, we're not going to get a chance to draft either of them unless we trade up.

this team doesn't prefer backs of that size, no. I don't believe that's going to be a big problem overall for him, but inthis offense, yeah, you take a lot of hits, and historically I can't think of a back that small in our stable in four years (neither the 5'8 nor the 200 even). i'd like to have a chance at Williams, but I don't think the team will be that hot on a guy smaller than what we've had.

Now if we decided to have another player in Foster's earlier role, then a guy like Mo Drew might be exempt from the "rule".
