All of these problems can be solved one of 2 ways.

    1. Get a real F'ing QB coach to keep JAke working on his fundamentals
    -or-

    2. Lob the ball into a 55 gallon drum every day during training camp.

While were at it. Who gets to throw the ball into the drum behind Jake during training camp?????

You're correct that I was exaggerating, but they still weren't anywhere near the receivers. They were multiple yards away from being caught.

The first INT is thrown at 12:44 in the 1st quarter. The Bears blitzed Briggs and Urlacher into the left side of the line, but both are picked up with Briggs taken out on an athletic dive by Wahle to push him past Delhomme. Jake steps up into a collapsing pocket, but Mitchell and Reyes do a good job of washing the defenders down to Jake's right, leaving him a lane to the left that he can step into. Jake does step up but as he's doing so he feels that Wharton has lost Alex Brown and he's about to be hit, which he is after the pass is thrown. Proehl is the intended receiver on an out to the Chicago 42, but Vasher is well underneath him and intercepts it on the Chicago 47. So yeah, it wasn't 10 yards but Jake had decent footwork on the throw, did step up into the lane, and was still 5 yards off on his throw. And for the record, the play started on our 36 so it was a pretty deep throw.

The next INT starts on our 27 with the Bears again blitzing Urlacher and Briggs, this time up the middle. Both LBs are picked up perfectly and there is a textbook example of a good pocket, but Jake backpeddles and does throw off his back foot in a panic despite no pressure at all around him. This time Vasher catches the ball at our 38 while Proehl is all the way down to the 42 and would have been further if he hadn't pulled up when he saw that the pass was horribly underthrown. And for what it's worth, Vasher had Chris Harris over the top to help on Proehl that play, which explains why he was so far underneath.

So at most you can say that footwork was a problem on the second INT, because Jake stepped into the first one just fine. And on the second one, Jake had a great pocket to step into, he just didn't. In both cases it appears that he just panics and gets rid of the ball.

So what your saying is the pressure has an effect on his decision making...which is what you've been arguing against for something like three months now.

back to the topic at hand. None of the receivers were that intriguing to my untrained eye. Wayne will be too much, and most likely will be held without bail in Indy anyway (Edge anyone?). Moulds could be released, especially with his antics during the season and a new (old) regime coming in. Also, Philly will probably be players for any decent receivers as well. I would prefer to get more push from the center position, but in todays NFL and with where our money is tied up, we dont have the available resources to sign a bigtime center and/or right guard. Under our current structure, we have to pray some of our guys will develop quickly...cough...Hangartner, Mathis. And we will probably have to spend a decent chunk on a backup tackle (if only Fordham had caught that pass, he might get another year). Would love a friggin plugger in the middle rather than relying on Carstens maxing out what he can do everygame.

And what is Carter's role gonna be next year? Probably not reliable enough to take over Proehl's role...so its probably like it is now, part time starter, taking turns with Colbert or whoever during the game as the #2.

But RB is the biggest question. Do we burn another first day pick this year to hedge our bet on Shelton, or do it thru free agency with a Maurice Morris type. Or possibly go for a Chester Taylor. And anyone think we could find a role for a Fred Beasley, assuming he has anything left?

The second is a step or two behind Proehl. The first is at about 3-4 yards, yeah. And both balls sailed, the mark of not stepping into a throw.

He definitely got flustered. Undoubtedly. But regardless of those long descriptions, I see the same play, the same awkward scramble, the same footwork. I don't see the bad decision in the choice, but while I can't see him having thrown them up for grabs, I can see it being said he made the wrong choice throwing without setting, and so on.

I'll apologize for using the Chicago game as benchmark, it's one of the few I've gone back and re-detailed.

The catches I've seen Carter make were with his body and not his hands. I want to deter any ability he has until I see some "hand" catches and how he RAC as well as maintaining ball control during hits...

If he's got a brain, Quincy Morgan would be a nice addition. He returns kicks, and has nice speed. Didn't play a ton, but when he did, he made some big plays for the Steelers this year.

Not sure he could supplant anything we have from 2-5, but he's got size and speed.
