I know HP will wipe data on old equipment that's returned, but I don't know what they use.

All I know is when I worked at the state that's what we had to use to wipe PC's to prevent data from getting out.

There are many "secure wipe" products. Several of these have normal user options (overwrites all content, not just wiping the FAT/MFT tables like a Format does), and a separate option for government approved wiping (there are various levels of that). The main difference is what they write (multiple passes of writing alternating 0's and 1's), and how long that takes (can be MANY hours/days).

Some of my buddies that were in military (air force) intelligence said their "secure wipe" standard was physical shredding and melting of the disks...

Low-level formats are not hard to come by - often these are possible from within the BIOS of add-on cards, or with a boot-floppy provided by the manufacturer of the drive.

I'm not exciting enough to hide anything and I don't have enough money that anyone would wanna steal it. And....if I was/did, I wouldn't put it on a computer.:)
