I think he was Brett's QB coach a while back...maybe they did so they could get one more year out of him.

Don't know how qualified he is, but like him. WCO guy, the prototypical QBs coach turned OC turned potential HC, Packers background. Probably a Brett pacification move since they don't want Mariucci, he fits as a candidate because he can pair with Jim Bates. Honestly, I'm surprised that teams aren't just lining up to take that job, being that they have that built in O philosophy, a top notch DC that'd probably want to stay, and despite the youth, a lot of talent.

He was scapegoated in NO for Brooks' problems, which I thought was bullshit. Same thing with Sean Payton (and Jim Skipper before him) in NY, so I don't think it's indicative of anything.

My guess is thats 100% the reason, which is a strange move for a team to make for a guy who is on his way out in the near future. I really don't know alot about the guy and maybe he's the answer, but it's just odd to me.

    Packers choose 49ers' offensive coordinator

The Green Bay Packers have chosen their successor to Mike Sherman and are currently in negotiations to hire their new man.

The Packers have selected 49ers offensive coordinator Mike McCarthy as their head coach after a tremendous interview on Sunday afternoon. The team called the other candidates early Wednesday to inform them they had made their choice. McCarthy was the team's quarterbacks coach in 1999 where he coached Brett Favre under Ray Rhodes.
McCarthy was hired last year as Mike Nolan's offensive coordinator after serving in the same role under Jim Haslett in New Orleans. The two sides are scheduled to continue negotiations through the night in order to have a deal finalized by Thursday morning.

The team also interviewed coaches such as the Cowboys' Sean Payton, the Chargers' Wade Phillips, their current defensive coordinator Jim Bates, Bears defensive coordinator Ron Rivera among others.

McCarthy has coached a solid pedigree of quarterbacks including Favre, Rich Gannon, Aaron Brooks, Jake Delhomme and this past year No. 1 pick Alex Smith.

    You know what they say....

When in doubt, go with the OC of the NFL's worst offense. I don't understand this damn hire one bit, regardless of his experience with Favre. Firing Sherman for McCarthy?

not to excuse that O, but Alex Smith was awful, they have very little at WR, and they also inherited one of the worst offenses coming in. Should've been better, but McCarthy had shown in the past that he was able to field a good offense.

Agreed, and I think he's just about proven that now. And you know what? That's okay. I don't think there's anything wrong with building a career in something you excel at and enjoy.

I heard Peter King on the radio this morning and he said he was shocked by the hire. McCarthy is not at all respected as a coordinator, although I did previously state that being a good OC or DC isn't reason for a head coaching job, so I don't know what his qualifications are. It seems like a reach to me, but I'm guessing that they know they're in a rebuilding mode and are hoping to have some long-term vision and stability at the top.
