If you really want to get to the bottom of this, you can go to NFL.com and click on each game and get a full play by play. Then just count the 3 and outs. I'd do it, but I have neither the time nor inclination. Here's a quick example.

3 and out (A series of 4 downs ending in a punt)

I took Week 6 and compared Panthers and Rams.

    CAR @ DET
    3 and Out
    CAR 5
    DET 6

    STL @ IND
    STL 1
IND 0 (Only 3 and out ended in a P.Manning kneel down at the half)

yeah, there's a side focus on the attack that detracts. I don't think that's why he's a fucking dumbass tool, I think that's more the byproduct.

At any rate, I still like what Martz does. And I do still think he hurts himself by not adapting more to the game, or to the situation, instead of sticking to his own script. It's crazy to think about how few carries a potent Faulk or Jackson has gotten against poor run Ds in close games, and to a point, that criticism is valid. It's certain that this year it hadn't worked quite as well as planned, but when he can keep the ball, there's less criticism awaiting. Still, there's a couple games every year, where the dust settles, and Faulk would have 15 carries, most in the first half, and they lose a late lead, or turn over the ball at a critical moment, etc. Every team has them, so it's neither damning nor excused, but he's most definitely "die by the sword".

A lot of guys ran Walsh's offense better than he did (especially some of those shitty QBs coaches who went on to win championships as head coaches). His O featured two tweener backs and at a time Montana was his "athletic rollout" QB.

The shame of it all is that nobody came out to really adopt that offense other than Vermiel, who most likely gave Martz a lot of advice on how to run it anyway - which was when it was run best. I remember in January 2002, stupidly starting to warm to the hype of the Spurrier ideal, because the thought was putting a Weinke in a shotgun, deep ball offense that would take advantage of what we had. That was under the assumption that Spurrier would wise up and use an attack more complex like Martz', and not the same simple option routes like he actually used (I also assumed he'd not hang so heavily on UF players and that he'd have a full, competent coaching staff). That was the only real chance to push that offense forward into the league, because Vermiel and Saunders are aging in KC, and it's not like Fairchild is ever going to be a HC in this league. Martz, by being the isolationist he is, has kept that O from flourishing the way it could.

By contrast, to bring it all back to the topic, Billick has done the opposite - he's promoted and allowed to leave more coaches than anyone that's kept tenure since he joined - and three of his assistants are now head coaches. Some whispers about Singletary suggest he's #4. That's an eighth of the league promoted from within Billick's heirarchy, when he could've kept his coaches rightfully (and would've been a lot better off right now), but instead stoked his ego. Losing Lewis still would've left him promoting JDR, with Nolan, Ryan, and Singletary being killer assistants under him. Lose JDR? Take your pick. But no, ego.

Wilf said he was sticking with him through the year. But this one doesn't help for him. If I were him, I'd be asking to resign soon.

What was with the timeouts at the end of the game? Did the broadcast team have anything to say about it?

Martz is toast. They won today w/o their starting QB, 2 WRs and a great starter on defense. Tice probably wishes he was on the love boat.

They said at this point Tice should be just be getting into the locker room instead of calling timeouts to maybe get the ball back and score again when you're obviously out of the game.

Ugh. PFW's editor is lobbying for the Rams to cut Martz loose and name Vitt fulltime head coach.
