He seemed to provide some spark today, certainly enough to warrant give him some more playing time. That one long catch he really dropped and the Saints should have challenged. The other catch where he fought for the first down was pretty nice. It was nice to see him fight for the ball on that one that Jake over threw. Colbert is in the dog house now for sure if he was not already. You could see Jake was pissed when Slaughter took the ball away from him.

Yeah, nice to see Jake target some other receivers today. Smith was AWESOME though. We need to quit using him for kickoff returns. Way too risky. Course he takes a few risks with plays like this:

Was nice to see Carter in there and them actually taking shots downfield. If nothing else his speed would open up the middle of the field, nobody is scared of getting burned deep by Colbert. I also like the RB duo much better. I wish we would have done this about 2 or 3 weeks ago to give Carter some time to get adjusted to a bigger role but, atleast he's there now.

Carter has already made more plays than Gardener did all year.

Never really understood the whole "don't use someone at KR, it's risky" argument. Sure, I suppose return guys get hurt sometimes. But it should be noted that returns are a viable part of the game, as it dictates field position. It should not be overlooked, or simply casted with a scrub (see Rod Smart)

Smith called Carter out during the preseason...saying he's the real deal

I'm just surprised it's taken this long to see him play. He might even get the start in front of Colbert next week. Wouldn't bother me none...

and don't get me wrong, I don't think Colbert sucks, maybe he just needs a spark. Sometimes a player can learn better by watching. Seems to be the case with Carter, seems to have been with Foster & Delhomme too. Nothing wrong with having to step back a bit.

Well, last year we struggled to find any PR to fill Smith's shoes, and never really did. That, and the fact that he's, what, 65,70% of the offense all by himself? I think that's risky as hell. Sure, a quarter of the league uses a starter to return kicks or punts, but none of them are the level of player Smith is.

Plus, too many times this year, Smith's slid, stepped out of bounds, or made other decisions to lose yards that a regular PR wouldn't have made, that would've given us better field position. Smitty's stats are good (a lot better thanks to that 44 yarder last week), and he's an asset there.

But I'd rather have a fulltime returner who can do both well.

    What brought that up?

Nice qoute from the Steve Reed article

Panthers safety Mike Minter said it was inevitable Carter would get on the field. “He has been killing us in practice and that is why coach (John) Fox had to put him up,” Minter said. “He has been making plays on our defense and really looking good. I told him today before the game, ‘Drew it’s just like practice. Don’t put anymore pressure on yourself.’ He took advantage of his opportunities. It’s a good thing to see young guys step up and make the most of their chance.”
