WRONG. Granted, Colbert and Gardner have been far from stellar, but part of the reason their stats are so low is that Jake rarely looks in their direction, and when he does he's rarely on target. Moreover, his mistakes haven't come primarily from forcing the ball to Smith, so your argument doesn't even make sense in that respect. Jake's problems are his own, no one else's, and he's the only one who can correct them.

Why do you think Colbert was doing so well last year?

I think the change from split end to flanker really has been a bigger deal than most people thought. He's running different routes and may not be as suited for them. Aside from that, Jake has had a real problem making his progressions all year. Prior to Buffalo, he just didn't check down much at all, which meant that secondary receivers weren't used. And the times where Colbert was the primary, either he didn't get open, he didn't catch it, or Jake missed him.

yeah, when its all other receivers besides smith sucking, the problem is somewhere else.

That's an excellent point. Ricky Proehl is about two steps from retirement, but he's always been effective.

Proehl's got as good of numbers as Colbert, and doesn't see the field but 1/3rd of the game or so. It's not all Jake.

    I think I buy it.

We fixed Jake this week, and he'll be more comfortable within the parameters we're forcing upon him soon.

But it shouldn't have taken this look to have done so. If Henning doesn't have enough time to adequately force Jake to do what we need on a weekly basis, then we're not coaching him quite well enough daily. So if it's not a dedicated, fulltime QBs coach to force Jake to do as we need every time we come off the field, maybe an experienced QB takes that role.

I don't care who does it, FWIW, as long as it gets done. The problem is that this is two years in a row that our QB has caused problems to deal with, that it took us too long to deal with.

You can't "fix" Jake. He's a 30 year old man. Either we neuter him like we did last week against the Bills (which obviously suited me fine), we deal with his mistakes, or we get another quarterback. Those are the only three realistic options, as history has shown that you simply don't fix athletes at that age and with that kind of experience.

We fixed him. I don't feel like playing word games, but we took the time to coach away some problems. You can't coach him into being Michael Vick or Peyton Manning, but you can coach him. Two years in a row now where we actually spent some significant time with him after big problems, and then he plays better. You can fix players.

Oh? I was under the impression that you weren't pleased with his performance last week:
We disagree, which is fine, but I think the Bills game showed exactly what I'm talking about, that the team doesn't feel like we can have Jake be aggressive without an abundance of mistakes (which is what I would call "fixing him"), so we're stuck with the choice between neutered Jake or occasionally brilliant but also highly mistake-prone Jake. Moreover, the idea that we can fix a QB in one week of practice seems rather naive, as well as going against the idea that we somehow need someone else to come in and fix things.
