Is it worth the hassel of setting this up or just better to use conventional web cams? Got the wife a digital camcorder and was thumbing through the manual and saw this was a feature.

the camcorder works very well if you have enough computer to operate it..
If i'm not mistaken it takes alot of resources to operate it.
The webcams work very well also...

Thanks. I'm pretty sure I have enough computer to run the camcorder. I was looking through the owners manual and it just seemed complicated to hook the damn thing up when an everyday web cam just plugs right in. Any idea of the overall quality of the camcorder vs. a regular web cam?

on a scale of 1 - 10... the camcorder quality would be 10..the webcam would be an 8...
whats all the hookup your talking about.. the camcorder would have a usb cable to attach to your PC i think... although you would need to use the battery power or an electric power cord...
    thats not that much trouble...
Get a logitech webcam ..they have the orbit which has face recognition and a control panel to move the position of the cam...

You can connect to your computer using a firewire connetion and use Yahoo Instant Messenger and view web cam. About as easy as it gets. Plus you can play video.

    Similar question.

Anyone know of a software program that will let me capture video from a camcorder to a laptop and pause playback like Tivo lets you do live TV. I coach swimming and want to film multiple swimmers swimming 1 length of the pool and show it to them as they walk back to the other end. I figure a 30 second to 1minute delay would work.

As far as the webcam question above It works great but you better have a huge hard drive because the avi format the video camera uses creates huge files. I usually run 30-45 minute clips when I tape swimmers and the raw video usually takes up around 8-12 Gigs of disk space before I convert the clips to WMV.
