Svaio - on a 42", check how far from the screen you'll sit most ogf the time.
I got a Panasonic EDTV - they make an HDTV in a 42".

I love mine. When I got it, the EDTV was about $1800, and HD was about $3k.

Now, the ED is like $1400, and the HD is like $2100.

The 50" is only $2950 now. Unreal.

Compare the sizes in a physical store (a nice one) at various distances. I think you'll find that a 42" does fine for 8' or so, a 50" becomes appealing if the viewing distance is larger than that. In my space, I often sit 16-20' away, and my 50" works great, and a 65" wouldn't be too big.

That said, the 50" is the deal price-wise, the 42" is the deal if you are a little more cost-conscious. And in the 42", don't even think of buying the HD model - you won't notice the difference, except the $700 extra that's not in your pocket anymore.

I imagine if you're close - 6'-8' you'd notice. I'm debating this right now while helping my parents with a setup.

Yeah, when that thing is sub $2k, I'm buying it and moving the 42". Then I'll have the 50" and the 42" for what the 50" alone would have cost in May......

Doubt it, but they've got deep pockets, so what the hell.

And by then, I'll have been enjoying my 50" for 2-3 years :).
