I won't go into detail but I need to investigate the usage of my 17 year olds computer usage history. It would be great if I could investigate past IM sessions.

I did not have tracking software installed previously. Any suggestions for the best software to use after the fact?

Yea, deadAIM whips ass, but your teen will know something is different about their messenger.

You could install a basic keylogger that recorded every keystroke, but it wouldnt necessarily record what he/she was receiving back to them.
