I defended the pick on several occasions and I do remember mags defended it also but mostly based on his Kick Return abilities.

Yeah, everyone defended the pick now that he's a Pro Bowler. But back then I can recall that I didn't even have to argue about how Smith sucked as a selection because no one was arguing for it.

Ok. You'll have to take my word. Since I posted at the Lair for quite a while under SS54 and I was IN the chat for that draft. But hey I have been in the Draft chat for a while, I defended Rashard Anderson too, but could not have been more wrong.

I do remember SS54, but I honestly don't remember anyone at all defending the Smith pick. I remember some people defending the Kris Jenkins pick (I wanted Shaun Rogers), but not Smith.

You're SS54? didn't know that. Yeah, the Lair was accepting of that draft that year.

I don't remember anyone really backing that pick that heavily at charlotte.com at the time. Piper didn't seem upset about it, but most people were. They didn't know who the fuck he even was.

Yep. Steveophone. That was pretty good. That was at charlotte.com, and you're right meat, you've never Laired.

Collin, I'm certain you were at charlotte.com. You might've stopped in to the Lair, but you really didn't post there much till you came on at the Lair to rip us all for booing Peete against Jacksonville in 2003, though you might've been around for preseason and the draft.

By the start of 2002, everyone at charlotte.com was here. You didn't show up here for a couple years.

This is pretty much how I've felt about Smitty, too. Wasn't against drafting a blue-chip KR, but in the 3rd round? I thought Seifert had lost his mind. Definitely wanted him gone after the punching incident in the film room.

But now, all I can say is that it's nice to see a guy take full advantage of a second (or third) chance. Seems like he's finally found the balance between passion and anger. Still happens far too rarely for me to have made the same decision (if, hypothetically, it was mine to begin with). It was a risky gamble that paid off in spades.

Smitty is the man. I hope he continues to be.

Why does someone have to be a nerd because theyre smart? Collin isnt a nerd. Im betting Magnus isnt, but no nerd is going to drive long distance to pound my face in like Collin was going to. Hes not a nerd. ANd Im not either.

From what I remember, and well, this is true, mags defended the pick. ANd guess what? So...did...I. Thats right, folks.

At first I was pissed...for about five minutes. Then in my foolishness, I began thinking he could be a decent slot guy, or a trick play guy, a guy you could run reverses with, or just your general trick plays. And I know I defended having him and Bates on teh field at the same time, thinking it was going to put us over the top on STs. I swear thats the truth too, the day he was drafted, magnus was kosher with it, though perplexed. BUt Magnus was kosher with anything Seifert did, and it always pissed me off terribly, and we literally ravaged each other during the Seifert era. I always thought magnus made excuses for anything Seifert did, and when Seifert left, m teed off on Smitty, and absolutely persecuted the fucker on the field. It was a hard sell, but he came around. BUt I promise, that day he did defend the pick...and so did I. Doesnt mean much. Ive been fucking dead wrong on other issues. And never....NEVER thought SMitty would be elite.

But dammit, after criticizing the Kris Jenkins pick as madly as I did, I cant let the Smitty thing go, 'cause I was there for him, baby...I was there.

Thanks for telling me when I did what. And for the record, you're extremely wrong about that too. As MoBigBo/SS54 notes, I was in the Lair's chat in 2001, and I posted there off and on during that entire period.
