well, I did change the power button settings. It's a brand new machine with a brand new motherboard, etc. and Windows update has been installing for a week. I've decided to use standby instead of hibernate. It comes back on when I move my mouse, the power fans still run, but it's better than not being able to get the damn thing to turn back on.

If you care to resolve it, there are two options:

Fiddle with it (takes a fair bit, unfortunately) to get standby changed to sleep mode (this is basically a new power management setting that allows near instant-resume like standby, but the whole system is shut down like hibernate). I use this on my media center PC, required adjusting my BIOS power management settings and making a registry tweak or two.

Get hibernate working correctly, most likely with a BIOS update. Brand new machines often come in with brand new motherboards, which usually have relatively frequent BIOS updates for a few months as they work out kinks like this. Since hibernate isn't used a lot on desktops, it wouldn't have been high on the test list and might have slipped past, so I'd check the manufacturer's web site periodically and see if anything comes up to resolve this.

Or just live with fan noise :).

there are three HUGE ones in here. It's a 3.0Ghz dual core something or other. Runs about 36-42 degrees Celsius right now. We'll see where that goes as the dust accumulates.

Did you know....that a dead or almost dead system battery on a desktop could affect the power button? I had a problem with the new machine where it would sometimes come on when you pressed it, sometimes not. Changed the battery and it all works just great. How fucked up is that? Hibernation works now too.
