    I'm a techno-idiot in need of guidance.

Some time back my hard drive died; & by sheer luck & perseverence, I managed to install a new one on my computer. But when I made the switch, I lost all sound. I MISS my sound!

Could the old hard drive have had the sound card as an integral part of it? Do I need a new sound card? Or do I just need to re-install some sound driver? And if so, how do I find the damn thing & do that?

    I'm so lost :( :banginghe

It sounds like a sound driver. First, if you have a legal version of Windows, try windows update. There is a chance that Windows will see you are missing a sound driver, and will install one for you. It will usually do that with AC97 hardware.

If not, you will need to download and install a sound driver - if you have a commercial PC - Dell, Gateway, HP, etc, post the model # here, the drivers should be easy enough to find.

Either that or find the resource/driver CD that came with the computer.

Mine did the same thing when I switched out my hard drive. The sound drivers are on your old hard drive. I found the website of the motherboard manufacturer and downloaded the updated sound drivers.

99% of the time Windows Update is enough to get all of your hardware working again :). Worst case, hit the manufacturers web site, but that can be a challenge cuz you have to know the make/model of what you have in the box...

OK, I tried EVERYTHING--except showing my tits, which I would do if it would clear up my confusion!

First tried to see if I could just select from my recovery disks without re-doing everything; but it wouldn't let me do that. So I went to Windows Update & let that "detect" everything I supposedly needed, & installed all that. That was just some security stuff, but I checked the sounds anyway--still none.

So I re-installed everything from my recovery disks. Still no sounds. Windows Help--Sound Troubleshooter. Went thru all those steps. What I have come up with is that either a sound card is not installed, or some element of it is not installed. I don't know if that means it just ain't physically there (tho I DID have sounds working fine before I changed the hard drive); or I just can't find the right way to actually hook it up.

Did you select 'Custom' on the Windows Update, or 'Express'? Choose 'Custom' and it will show you optional installs, including those for hardware.

Thanks--I'll try that. At this point I don't remember exactly what the hell I did. *blush*
