quite possibly the dumbest, most useless function on WinXP, unless you like trying to figure out how to turn the damn thing back on. :banginghe

Huh? There must be something else to this, it's just too easy. Anyhow, I just wriggle the mouse and follow the "yellow brick road." Hibernating is good for maintaining your place[on the internet], without having to reopen the site(s). e.g. If I hibernate here, when I reconnect to the net I'll be right back at this spot/reply.

well, I used it on my laptop all the time. But when I use it on my new desktop, it shuts down, but the power button won't bring it back to life. Eventually, after holding the power button, resetting the machine, and leaving it unplugged overnight, I don't know which or what made it turn back on, but it rebooted from the start. nothing saved, all info "lost". I had saved everything though and it was as it was when I got rebooted.

You might have to change your power button settings. Same place.

Once you select Hibernate, the machine should save memory state do disk. As it is doing that, you see the progress meter running. If the machine actually completes hibernating, it will turn off at the end. When you state that you held down power, reset, and pulled the plug, that indicates the machine didn't power off correctly. To me, that seems to indicate a flaw in the power management software for that box. If it's a name brand, check their site for power management updates. For anything, check WindowsUpdate. Make sure your motherboard BIOS is updated (that's the MOST likely solution).

    Good luck!

    I was thinking of Standby.
And please accept all my unwarranted comments.
