    has vanished from my desktop. How is this possible, and how can I get it back?

    I did that, although I hate re-booting with the power switch on the tower. It did clear it up, but makes me nervous that things like that can happen.

    CTRL-ESC will bring up the Start Menu.

    If your taskbar isn't locked, you can drag it accidentally off the screen, or shrink it so it is just a few pixels wide... if you move your mouse to the bottom of the screen, assuming you shrank it down accidentally, your mouse should turn into the up/down arrow and you can click and drag it back up.

    Rebooting without logging off means your profile wasn't saved, which includes the taskbar settings, so it reverts back to being normal size.

    thanks for the input--it was just weird, and rebooting brought it back....thanks for answering what is likely a very simple question for a computer illiterate like me.
