On ESPN Melrose just said the ranking of greatest players ever was
    1) Gretzky
    2) Messier
    3) Howe

He should have been fired on the spot.

Mess was good, but 2nd behind Gretz? No. Gordie was 10x the player Mess was, and did it against the VERY best players, considering he was playing in the original 6 era.

It takes a special player to be considered better than the total package that Messier is (I don't use pass tense because he could still play for years and be effective. If any of you had ever played hockey, you might be able to realize the intangilbles that Messier brings. The greatest Captain in team sports. That is not even debated, it is fact. Not only does he bring his steely gaze and chestload of other intangibles, the man can play.

I can't even explain it all he is that good.
    The Stare.
    The Guarantee.
Bringing the Cup to the Garden.
    The Goals.
    The Assists.
I hate to call him even the 2nd greatest player because it does him a disservice, but Gretzky is a freak of nature.
If you started a team right now with you could draft any player in history, you would be a fool not to take Messier.
I just hopes he Coaches like Gretzky, imagine all he could teach the young group of players. It would be so fitting for him to do that in NY!
:trophy: We will miss you Messier. :trophy:

How many Stanley cups has Gretz won w/o Messier?

How many did Mark get w/o Gretz?
