And for the record, Modell is known in NFL circles as one of the kindest, most knowledgeable (former) owners in the game. What went down in Cleveland is unfortunate, but he has always been considered a great owner by people in the know.

I'm not writing about Shinn....I am telling you what is known about Model. And I stated that I don't blame him for making money - no one did - but he NEVER negotiated with the city. He was given an offer....and he NEVER gave the city or the fans a chance to met or beat the deal. I think it is obvious that the fans would have kept the team in that city if there had been anything they could do.

So say what you want....but Model is a selfish asshole. Granted a lot richer now but still an asshole.

    Ah, yes,*time about....

Baltimore emptied its coffers to make art Modell*a rich man. Did he*deserve it? Not for me to say, except he enters into a club of gentlemen whose motives are not always of the highest order (see Irsay, Davis, etc.) Corruption is not always with the jailbirds on the field.

#1) Continue playing in a stadium built in 1931 that requires constant repairs and has no luxury boxes

    or

#2) Get a brand-new, state of the art stadium and $200 million.

Cleveland screwed Modell for years; it's not his fault that he got a far better deal somewhere else.

oh well, that was a different time and a different era........Modell set the table for owners to hold a gun to a city's head to give them something.....he was the first dickhead , asshole, greedy fucker to move a team. It is the standard now.

Dude, that's not even close to correct. He was one of the last to move (only Tennessee moved more recently, I think).

    ...Like us all

art Modell*contributed so much to the NFL of the 60s that it is impossible to measure.*His negotiations with the TV networks helped to make Pete Rozelle look like a*genius. Through his own mismagement in Cleveland (how do you lose $$$ in*a soldout stadium of 80,000?), he came to Baltimore*with little or no money and an eternal hate from millions of people. Now that he has retired,*he*can reflect on his successes and his own*conscience. Like all the players who*dismiss any loyalty*for the big buck, he can say, "I* owed it to my family."

Hey, I'm*a whore. I would do it, too. But I*wouldn't like myself in the morning.

Al Davis moved twice before then.
Actually the Cards moved, what, four times? The Rams used to be in Cleveland and LA, and Anaheim, right?

By the way, I'd like to note that Al Lerner set up the meetings and contacts with Baltimore. Al Lerner flew Modell to Baltimore. The deal was made on Lerner's jet. Now Lerner owns the Browns. Where's the outrage on that?

He'd been public about wanting a new stadium since 1980.

He bankrupted himself reviving that old stadium. The city moved the Indians out, squashing revenue for the stadium. You move, or you lose a franchise you've spent 35 years trying to nurse. Which do you choose?

I'm not saying he's a hero. Maybe to Baltimore, who went from no team in 20 years to Super Bowl in 4. But he's heads above George Shinn, and I don't actually have the bitterness against Shinn that most in this area do.

Not that he's not an asshat.
