good reps for the younger players. provided minter comes back 100%, this is a good thing.

He's not great at it, but he's good enough. He's not a good matchup on the TE, he's not a good fit for size. The SS spot, to a point, gives a little less room for interpretation, and therefore instinct - a lot of people, me included, were wary of his instincts but felt he could handle his assignments, and therefore suggested SS somewhat. Minter's undersized, and made it work at SS for a long time, but he's certainly a talent that will end up succeeding despite weaknesses - as do I believe that for Davis.

as long as Minter can stay in the ear of Thomas Davis, I'm cool

best 11 guys on the field though might be Branch at FS & Davis at SS, until Minter gets back though

Signing Bashir and Mcree might end up being a smart move if Minter misses much time. I think we were all looking for one of them to beat out Branch at free safety anyway. If Thomas Davis catches on quickly we might be ok without Minter.

Well the mantra this year seems to be depth, wish we didn't have to dip into it so early. Hopefully the news will be good for Mike.

Minter suffers sprained left knee during drill

The Carolina Panthers got their first major injury scare of training camp Thursday.Veteran safety Mike Minter sprained his left knee in a goal-line drill near the end of the afternoon practice. Minter was treated on the field by the training staff. The knee was wrapped with ice and he was carted off the field.

General manger Marty Hurney said Thursday night that Minter has only a minor sprain and will be day-to-day. In the past, injuries of this type have kept players out one to two weeks.

Minter has been working at free safety, after spending most of his career on the strong side. The injury could clear the way for rookie Thomas Davis to get some first-team work.

Davis has been working as the backup strong safety behind Colin Branch, who started at free safety last year. The Panthers also have plenty of other depth at safety, after adding veterans Idrees Bashir and Marlon McCree in the offseason. -- PAT YASINSKAS
