I'm probably going to go A64 when I grab something new, but I'm not versed on it. For a while, my main source of info, the guy who's "helped" me build shit since 98, was telling me to get with the newer pentiums for the hyper threading.

What's the deal with the dual core? Is that just for hardcore apps and gamers?

Yes and no. If you truly multi-task, its great. Otherwise, yeah, overkill, but by this time next year, it will be widely available and affordable, so why not get some extra ponies under the hood?

Intel is faster for DVD decoding/encoding still.
A64 is the dealio for everything else.
