Panthers | Want to Tie up Foster, but He's not Ready
    Mon, 18 Jul 2005 20:28:54 -0700

Adam Schefter, of NFL.com, reports the Carolina Panthers would like to sign RB DeShaun Foster to a contract extension because his contract expires at the end of the 2005 season. Foster has been hesitant to discuss any long-term extension. He would rather wait until after this season, when he is one of the top free agents on the market.

    A STORY WITH A TWIST

How's this for a changeup? The Panthers would like to get a contract extension done with one of their players, and the player would rather wait.

Panthers running back DeShaun Foster is scheduled to become a free agent after this season. The Panthers would like to tie him to the franchise for years to come, but Foster has been hesitant to discuss any long-term extension. He would rather wait until after this season, when he is one of the top free agents on the market

Of all the running backs from his draft class, none will be any more pursued than Foster. The only one who would have been would be Clinton Portis, but he signed a long-term deal with Washington over a year ago that included $17 million in signing and option bonuses. Now Foster wants to become the next back from that draft class to cash in.

Due to injuries and the acquisition of Stephen Davis, Foster has only 172 carries during his first three NFL seasons, so he's fresher than most running backs in the league. If he manages to stay healthy this season, then Foster is looking at scoring big after this season.

He'd better have a big year and stay healthy.

Why do our running backs always get hurt?

Seriously. That's a big risk, but with a potentially monstrous payday.

kinda makes sense for Foster. If there is a big improvement in the OL, which is expected, Foster could have a huge year and look forward to making the big " set for life" bucks. Of course if he gets hurt things will go downhill.

This could work out good for the Panthers as well as Foster.

Yeah, this is one of the few times I'd prefer not to sign a long term deal until the last possible minute.

He's never had 1 good season. His value goes WAY up if he can at least play 10 games and rush 1000 yards.

He's never done that. Career wise, his stats are Nick Goings.

Either way - I don;t care if he stays or goes, as long as he doesn't fumble and he stays healthy.
