I thought Morgan would be easier to resign

But if Rosenhaus can get this kind of money for this stiff then we will have \to deside between Witherspoon or Dan who to resign

    Panthers | Morgan Contract Note
    Sun, 17 Jul 2005 11:22:48 -0700

Darin Gantt, of the Rock Hill Herald, reports stories of negotiations between the Carolina Panthers and agent Drew Rosenhaus going slowly for a new contract for LB Dan Morgan are correct. Stories saying Morgan's looking for a new contract which will pay him between $3 million and $4 million per season are not quite correct. If that's all Morgan wanted, the deal would have been done months ago. In March, Rosenhaus was able to negotiate a six-year, $26 million contract (with a $6.5 million bonus) for LB Antonio Pierce with the New York Giants. That comes to just over $4.3 million per year for Pierce. It's impossible to imagine Rosenhaus would take less of a deal for Morgan, whom most consider a superior player to Pierce. In fact, Rosenhaus is actually looking for far more for Morgan, according to several sources around the league. The Panthers understand the importance of having Morgan in the middle of their defense and they'll continue to work toward an extension.

Actually that's from this morning's Gantt:

    • BAD INFORMATION: The Panthers' current negotiations with linebacker Dan Morgan on a contract extension may not be close, but neither is a lot of the information about the discussions.

Other publications continue to insist Morgan's looking for a new contract which will pay him between $3 million and $4 million per season. They continue to be wrong. If that's all he wanted, the deal would have been done months ago.

Consider that in March, agent Drew Rosenhaus got a six-year, $26 million contract (with a $6.5 million bonus) for linebacker Antonio Pierce from the New York Giants. That comes to just over $4.3 million per year for the former Redskins starter.

It's impossible to imagine Rosenhaus would take less of a deal for Morgan, whom most consider a superior player to Pierce. (It should be noted that Morgan was a Pro Bowler last year and Pierce was a second alternate.)

In fact, Rosenhaus is actually looking for far more for Morgan, according to several sources around the league. Maybe not as much as Ray Lewis (seven years, $50 million), but well more than Pierce.

That said, the Panthers understand the importance of having Morgan in the middle of their defense and they'll continue to work toward an extension.

While they'd like to get something done before camp starts, it's also not uncommon for the Panthers to go into the season with pending contract discussions. Defensive linemen Mike Rucker and Kris Jenkins each got their deals re-done after the start of camp, with Jenkins' coming a month into the 2003 season.

There are other problems as well. Will Witherspoon said earlier this summer he believes he's worth Pierce money as well, an opinion not widely shared. There's a chance the Panthers will be able to keep one or the other past this year, but the chances both stay beyond 2005 are probably slim.

I'm not worried about losing Dan Morgan. I think he's one of the best LB's in the league, but the 8 or 9 games he's healthy doesn't make him a make or break player for us.

I think in the end Morgan will be resigned and Witherspoon allowed to walk. Whether that's the way any of us like it or not.

Does anyone else think that WW's departure is possibly the entire reason we drafted Davis? One year at sadety, then slide him to WLB.

I would say he was more insurance, than a ticket out for Witherspoon. With BOTH Minter and Witherspoon being Free Agents at season's end, it was smart business to cover their asses with a guy like Davis.
