Sources: Panthers close to trading three-time Pro Bowl punter Sauerbrun to

    By: Steve Reed
    Gazette Sports Reporter

CHARLOTTE — The Carolina Panthers are close to reaching a deal that would send three-time Pro Bowl punter Todd Sauerbrun to the Denver Broncos, two league sources confirmed Saturday. However, sources said there remain a few details to be worked out and it could take a couple of weeks before a deal is officially consummated.

It’s unclear exactly what the Panthers would get in return for Sauerbrun, but it’s not likely to be anything higher than a fourth-round draft choice.

It’s notable the Panthers would even get anything in return for Sauerbrun, especially since it’s relatively common knowledge that the team would have released him if they couldn’t trade him. However, three teams apparently willing to overlook Sauerbrun’s off-the-field issues have stepped to the plate in recent weeks and shown interest, creating some competition.

On the field, Sauerbrun remains a dangerous weapons in the league, having led the NFL two seasons in gross average under the tutelage of special teams coach Scott O’Brien.

The Panthers have no problem with Sauerbrun’s production on the field, but his antics off the field have grown to be a source of irritation to team management over the past four years.

Sauerbrun has repeatedly made outlandish statements in the media, and didn’t help his cause when he was arrested for an alleged DUI last year and implicated in a steroids investigation earlier this off-season by “60 Minutes II.” Sauerbrun was not available for comment, but his agent David Canter said his client would welcome a new start in a different city.

“It’s become pretty clear that he’s not appreciated in Charlotte, North Carolina,” Canter said. “And that’s too bad because he’s head and shoulders the best punter in the league.”

Sauerbrun is not attending this weekend’s minicamp.

Panthers general manager Marty Hurney said Sauerbrun is absent because the team wants to look at the other two punters on the roster, Steve Cheek and Tom Rouen, both of whom were signed this off-season as free agents.

However, Hurney acknowledged the team has been trying to trade Sauerbrun for more than two months.

Hurney said the team was trying to trade him before the “60 Minutes II” report that tied him to prescriptions for steroids from the office of South Carolina Dr. James Shortt.

Actually we could use both terms - Dukey Speak would refer to the entire post being confusing, but catch phrases that Dukey uses could be Dukey-isms! :satana:

I think we will miss him. I'm not really into what happens off the field. I've known some pretty intelligent guys that have received DUI's (I never have, I don't drink much and never drive while drinking).

As far as the deal with the fines and being overweight, what the f***. If your one of the best at your position who cares if your overweight. I certainly don't.
Coach should have changed his playing weight.

The steroid thing is bad, but probably not uncommon.

I guess I am too results oriented. Todd can help turn a game. Just win baby.

Todd needs to go. I liked Todd as a player, and anything we get now will be a step down, but Todd needs to go.

Hopefully Fox and Co. are building a team that does not rely on the skills of the punter. If you can move the ball downfield and have your defense hold down teams, a couple of net punting yards of posistion is not worth all the off-field antics.

Fans of good teams should not be able to identify thier punter...

With all that has happened, I do not disagree.

Google John Fox and field position. The two are almost inseparable.Todd has been a large part of it. I hope we don't, but I think we will miss him. If I'm wrong, it will be great.
