Then you'd have a hard time filling out an NFL roster.

BTW, you shouldn't qaulify everyone who has used a drug as a bad guy. Humans are prone to fucking up, that's just how it is. Mitchell seems like a good enough guy, and I'm glad the Panthers are supporting him.

Mitchell apologizes for link to inquiry
Panthers center part of case looking at S.C. doctor

Carolina Panthers center Jeff Mitchell apologized Friday for being linked to a federal steroids investigation of a West Columbia, S.C., physician.

A CBS News report last month said Mitchell, Panthers punter Todd Sauerbrun and former Carolina tackle Todd Steussie filled prescriptions for banned steroids within the two weeks before they played in the 2004 Super Bowl.

A federal grand jury in Columbia this week took testimony regarding Dr. James Shortt, who wrote the prescriptions, from some current and former Panthers players, according to sources. The Drug Enforcement Administration has been investigating whether Shortt illegally prescribed steroids. The S.C. medical board has suspended Shortt's license to practice in the state.

"I want to apologize to (team owner) Mr. (Jerry) Richardson and the whole community for ever being associated with that whole deal down there," Mitchell told the Observer in a telephone conversation early Friday afternoon. Mitchell did not elaborate.

Contacted again Friday evening, Mitchell said he had already apologized to and reached an understanding with teammates since returning to Charlotte about two weeks ago. He said he had left a message for Richardson on Friday and planned to apologize to him in person soon.

Mitchell said he didn't try to contact Richardson last week because of the death of assistant coach Sam Mills.

"That was the wrong timing, but it will happen very soon," Mitchell said.

He participated in the Panthers' minicamp practices Friday and spoke to reporters after the morning workout. About an hour later, he contacted the Observer to clarify how he had answered a question. It was then that Mitchell apologized.

During the interview after practice, Mitchell had declined to discuss the steroids investigation.

"Anything in that area is pretty much off-limits for me," Mitchell said. "I just can't talk about it."

But he did respond when asked if he was concerned that his reputation as a player, or the Panthers' reputation as an organization, had been affected.

"That's something you've got to deal with," Mitchell said. "It's a speed bump and it's no fun. But at the same time, I'm not sitting around thinking about that. I've just got to go to work."

When Mitchell contacted the Observer later, he said he didn't intend for his response to sound like he didn't take the matter seriously.

"When I said it was a `speed bump,' I meant that in the scope of my whole life and my career," Mitchell said. "I don't want to minimize it at all."

Sauerbrun did not attend Friday's minicamp practices. Team officials said they wanted to look at their other punters. The Panthers are expected to release or trade Sauerbrun by early June.

Steussie now plays for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Sauerbrun, Steussie and their attorneys did not return calls Friday afternoon.

Citing pharmacy prescription records, the CBS News program "60 Minutes Wednesday" reported that Mitchell filled seven prescriptions for testosterone. It said Steussie had filled 11 prescriptions for testosterone over an eight-month period of 2004, and that Sauerbrun filled prescriptions for testosterone and an injectable form of the steroid Stanozolol.

Since the report aired, the NFL and the NFL Players Association have agreed to toughen the league's steroids testing policy. The amount of testosterone needed to result in a failed test was decreased, and the number of times players can be tested for steroids in the offseason was tripled from two to six.

A U.S. House of Representatives committee investigating steroids in sports held a hearing this week about the NFL's testing policy. NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue and NFLPA Executive Director Gene Upshaw testified.

Panthers coach John Fox said he didn't consider not allowing Mitchell to participate in the three-day minicamp that started Friday.

"In this society, you're innocent until proven guilty," Fox said.

Saying you're sorry a good 1st step

America loves an apology. Jeff Mitchell did the right thing Friday when he offered one for his involvement in the Carolina Panthers' steroids mess, capping an interesting and mostly positive first day of Panthers minicamp.

Mitchell talked with reporters Friday for the first time since the allegations surfaced. The occasion: Carolina's first team practice in four months.

Mitchell, as usual, practiced as the starting center. After the workout, I thought he sounded like himself for most of his brief interview -- polite, poised and generally intelligent.

But he also sounded flip when he at first characterized the adversity that now clouds his career as "a little speed bump."

This is not a speed bump. This is at least a major pothole -- and possibly a sinkhole -- for Mitchell. This is about steroids, one of the most dangerous words in all of sports.

To Mitchell's credit, he realized his verbal mistake. He called Observer reporter Charles Chandler later in the day and said: "When I said it was a `speed bump,' I meant that in the scope of my whole life and my career. I don't want to minimize it at all. I want to apologize to (team owner) Mr. (Jerry) Richardson and the whole community for ever being associated with that whole deal down there."

"That whole deal down there" might later earn Mitchell an NFL suspension, depending how the investigation into Dr. James Shortt turns out. An apology doesn't wipe that away. (Mitchell wouldn't answer questions about the investigation itself, citing legal reasons).

But it does look like Mitchell is the first of the three players named in the probe to own up a little to what's going on, which is a good sign.

There were many other good signs Friday for Carolina. Drew Carter flew by former Ohio State teammate Chris Gamble on one 40-yard pass and grabbed it in full stride. Carter, who never played as a rookie in 2004 because of a major knee injury, looked Friday like he could help the team's thin receiving corps, maybe as a No. 4 receiver.

And Steve Smith looked like himself again, cutting sharply and catching most everything thrown to him. Quarterback Jake Delhomme was delighted. "I'm sure by the end of minicamp we'll throw a few up there and just let Smitty jump and defy gravity for a little while," Delhomme said, grinning.

Kris Jenkins was back -- and mighty big. DeShaun Foster was back -- and very fast. Suddenly, the Panthers looked deeper than the holler, as Randy Travis once sang.

Todd Sauerbrun wasn't there, of course. The Panthers' lame explanation for this is that they know what Sauerbrun can do and so they didn't invite him. That's ridiculous. They know what Delhomme, Mike Minter and dozens of other players can do, too, but all were invited.

Sauerbrun -- who like Mitchell and former Panther Todd Steussie has been named in the steroids investigation -- almost certainly will never suit up for the Panthers again. They will either trade him or waive him, probably in June, and then get by with another punter with less leg and far fewer off-field problems. So they don't need him here.

Mitchell, though, is going to be around awhile. He needed to say he was sorry.

His apology doesn't resolve the situation.

But it does begin the healing.
