Branch, Manning win big in bonus money

Panthers pay out $1.784 million based on formula

    PAT YASINSKAS
    Staff Writer

In comparison to many of the other Carolina Panthers, defensive backs Colin Branch and Ricky Manning didn't cash in last season.

But Branch and Manning, who each earned $305,000, are big winners in the offseason. According to numbers obtained by The Charlotte Observer, Branch and Manning are the top two Panthers in the NFL's performance pay pool.

Each year, the league rewards those that had low contracts, but got lots of playing time. The league uses a system that factors in the amount of snaps each player had, comparing it to their base salaries and using a formula to determine bonuses.

Branch was Carolina's top beneficiary, earning a $124,951 bonus. The bonus money does not count against the team's salary cap and each of the 32 teams is given $1.784 million to divide for its pool.

Manning was Carolina's next top owner, picking up a check for $122,063. Other Panthers getting bonuses of more than $50,000 included Travelle Wharton ($95,286), Will Witherspoon ($94,620), Kindal Moorehead ($87,331), Keary Colbert ($80,046), Matt Willig ($70,491), Vinny Ciurciu ($64,940), Jordan Carstens ($60,365), Mike Seidman ($54,118), Chris Gamble ($52,935), Kris Mangum ($52,901) and Nick Goings ($52,624).

New York Jets safety Erik Coleman received the league's largest bonus, earning $227,625.

Willig should re-pay every red cent he has ever taken from Jerry Richardson.

If for no other reason, single handedly costing us the Broncos and Saints games.

signing bonus isn't included when they calculate for this purpose, from what I gather. Gamble's base salary is likely pretty low.

I think this money is paid by the NFL, and does not count towards the cap.
