A lot of players have pimped his knowledge of football, calling him "The Professor". I'm sure that's part of why he's hung around so long.

He is the best in the draft at his position, that doesnt make him a quality first round pick.

you don't think Davis is a quality first round pick? what are your thoughts on him? Pip says he's more of a strong safety and that's the read i'd get but would he not be an immediate big upgrade over Branch? and if minter was to be soon leaving ... couldn't we plan to move him to SS and look to get a FS in the draft next year? i've read that he is a certain difference maker on defense. would you disagree?

OK. Now guys worth a damn.

    Now, take out the SS.

    Bashir, Idrees
    Coleman, Marcus
    Demps, Will

And I'll add Wilson, becuase he's got all the size and skills you'd look for. But he's going to get some money. It'd probably mean asking Minter to go FS, but it'd also mean we could cover a TE.

Demps is fairly quick but small, and has been ok in a system playing next to Ed Reed. Coleman went from corner to safety this year, made some plays, and would be a vet presense and perhaps won't cost too much. Bashir is getting pushed out by youth. He's a rangy player, not a physcial player, but a good center field type.

He's a physical player, looks for the hit, not the pick. He's bigger, stronger, and faster than Thomas Davis, UGA's FS in 2003 that went to the Browns in the second round last year.

He's not as experienced a safety though, with only one year at the position. He did play Free, but plays best if you are willing to put him near the line and play aggresive. I'm not sure if in our scheme we are willing to do that, which is more Minter's role. The pick might mean the end of Minter after this season, or moving him to Free.

What I am saying is that being the best at your position does not make you a first rounder. Teams who draft like that end up like the Bungles, years of futility.

No. Being the best at a position doesn't make you a first rounder.
But being rated as a top 15-top 30 prospect does, and Davis is.
Actually, a safety's gone very high in most of the drafts of the last four years.

I had Davis top 15 going into this season, now though,I really don't have him graded that much higher then next few safety's. Its a bad year to need a safety.

for what its worth, as I've said before I have Shazor #1 on my list now (safety)

I dont like Thomas Davis in the first round. If we are going to spend 1st or 2nd lets use it on a guy with great cover skills. Brandon Browner is excellent in coverage and has the physical tools to become an outstanding FS, played well in the LSU game. Already a good tackler, he could learn under Branch for a while till hes ready to take over FS.
