MIAMI BEACH, Fla. -- Former Oakland Raiders center Barret Robbins has been charged with at least three felonies, including attempted murder, ESPN's John Barr has learned. The charges stem from an altercation with a police officer last weekend that resulted in Robbins being shot and hospitalized

Miami Beach police confirm that Robbins, 31, has been charged with attempted felony murder of a law enforcement officer, attempt to deprive an officer of means of protection, resisting an officer with violence and trespassing.

The attempt to deprive an officer of means of protection charge was filed because Robbins allegedly tried to take the police detective's gun from him during the altercation.

Robbins was shot several times in the torso during a "violent struggle" with a Miami Beach detective Saturday night, police spokesman Bobby Hernandez said.

"The officer was literally fighting for his life, trying to get Mr. Robbins from getting his gun. That's when the shots rang out," Hernandez said.

Robbins also was arrested last month in San Francisco -- after allegedly hitting a security guard at a nightclub.

Robbins played all nine of his pro seasons with the Raiders, and he made the Pro Bowl after the 2002 season but did not play in the game. He is perhaps best known for disappearing the night before the 2003 Super Bowl and spending game day in a hospital.

Robbins was released by Oakland in July, a week after he and two other players were fined three game checks for testing positive for the steroid THG. He has been linked to the BALCO steroid scandal.

He later admitted he'd stopped taking medicine for depression and bipolar disorder.

The last word on Robbins' medical condition came from his agent, Drew Pittman, who told the San Francisco Chronicle on Sunday evening that Robbins was in critical but stable condition.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

IF he attempted to take an officer's gun, as big as he is, I would have shot him too. It is too bad he has a mental condition, but the officer had to go home, it sounds like it was either shoot him, or die. I heard on the news that the officer actually went unconcious from the beating he took. He was able to somehow fire his weapon before blacking out.
