ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Falcons may not play quarterback Michael Vick on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints, but they will pay him in plenty of time for their star to finish his Christmas shopping.

ESPN.com has learned that Vick and the Falcons have agreed in principle on a seven-year contract extension. Barring last-minute snags, the deal will be announced by the club during a Thursday afternoon news conference. There remains some detail work to be done on the contract and some elements of contract language must still be approved by the league.

The extension, added to the two seasons remaining on his original NFL contract that Vick signed when he was the first overall selection in the 2001 draft, is essentially a lifetime deal. It will tie Vick to the Falcons through the 2013 season.

Financial details were not yet available, but agent Joel Segal told ESPN.com the contract will make Vick the NFL's highest paid player in terms of total dollars. It is believed the guaranteed money will top the $34.5 million signing bonus the Indianapolis Colts paid Peyton Manning 10 months ago.

There had been casual talks about an extension, but discussions between Segal and owner Arthur Blank accelerated this week.

I think all the bad mojo Vick and Theisman have left on each others chins over the past 3 seasons will be rewarded. Just think about how hosed the Foulcunts will be when Vick has his carrer ending injury just months after getting his signing bonus :xyzthumbs

I see it playing out like Vick never lives up to the hype. He plays for several years as an average running QB. He is never gonna be a good pocket passer and will end up like Kordell Stewart eventually. He will be the Falcon's Sean Gilbert. One injury that takes away a little of his mobility and he will be done.

PRO BOWL BERTH FORCED FALCONS' HAND?

Apparently, it's not a coincidence that the Atlanta Falcons and quarterback Mike Vick reached agreement, as reported by ESPN's Len Pasquarelli, on a contract extension one day after the 2004 Pro Bowl rosters were announced.

There's scuttlebutt in some circles that Vick's addition to the Pro Bowl roster triggered a big-money 2005 roster bonus and/or salary escalator that would have created cap hell for the team.

We're also hearing that, as Pasquarelli reported, Vick's guaranteed money will eclipse the $34.5 million paid to Colts quarterback Manning -- but not by much. The number currently making the rounds is $35 million.

Still, don't forget that the initial reports of a contract extension usually contain exaggerated information regarding the value of the "signing bonus." We'll get the real numbers, eventually, and break the thing down so that everyone has access to the true state of affairs.

I'm hoping this means the cap is going to go up. Don't look now, but Pep, Jenks, Smith, Ruck, and Delhomme will eat up a lot of cap space come 2006. It be nice to be able to absort a couple of others.
