It appears that Dimebag/Diamond Darrell was shot and killed tonight during a concert with his new/side band in Columbus Ohio. I've been hoping this was another internet hoax, but it appears to be true. There may be another former Pantera member killed as well, details are still coming out. I think there are at least 5 dead including the gunman. Apparently 90 sec into the set, the gunman jumped onstage and unloaded into Dime's head, and then started firing on other men in the band.

I wasn't a huge Pantera fan, or metal, but I did have and enjoy their album that was big in the mid 90's. It had a blue cover, can't remember the name right now.

Terrible way to die, 3 like a mo'fo.

    Far Beyond Driven.

This is hands down my all time favorite band, and I feel like someone has stomped a hole in my chest.

With all the shit that Phil has been doing, fucking with everybody, this shit had to happen.

I really hope that sonofabitch didnt get Vinnie.

It appears to be true. I've been following this story online through several forums for about three hours.

This was a band on the rise with an pre-established following. Why couldn't this happen to some fucking gangsta rappin fuckstick who had little to nothing to offer.

You look at the influence Pantera had on alot of todays popular acts and you gotta say WOW! Korn and the like owed these guys alot.

Five Die in Ohio Heavy Metal Band Shooting

Add to My Yahoo! Top Stories - Reuters

COLUMBUS, Ohio (Reuters) - A man charged on stage and opened fire on a heavy metal band at a crowded bar in Columbus on Wednesday night, killing four people and wounding two others before being killed by police, officials said.

Among the dead was "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, guitarist for the band Damageplan, who witnesses said appeared to have been singled out by the gunman and shot several times at close range, local media reported.

One witness said the gunman fired at least 16 shots, both at the band and the crowd inside the Alrosa Villa on the city's north side where about 200 patrons were attending a Damageplan performance.

Other witnesses said a man wearing a hooded sweatshirt climbed on the stage and began screaming and shooting.

Sgt. Brent Mull, spokesman for the Columbus police, said a police officer called to the scene shot and killed the gunman. "We believe he saved other lives" by shooting the gunman, he said.

Two people who were wounded were taken to a hospital.

Mull said the motive for the shooting was not known. The Columbus Dispatch and the NBC television affiliate in Columbus, WCMH, reported that one of the dead was the guitarist Abbott.

The television station said the band was playing its first number in a set when chaos broke out. Some members of the audience initially thought the affair might have been part of the band's act, the station said.

Abbott, 38, and his brother, drummer Vinnie Paul, were previously with Texan thrash metal band Pantera, which formed in the early 1980s.

That group topped the U.S. album charts with its 1994 release "Far Beyond Driven," which also yielded a Grammy nomination. After the band's bitter break-up the brothers formed Damageplan with singer Pat Lachman and bassist Bob Zilla.

Damageplan's debut album, "New Found Power" -- hailed for its "violent dissonance" by Blender magazine -- hit No. 38 on the U.S. charts earlier this year.

People are fucking stoopid. This should have happened at the Clay Aiken X-mas special.

Dimebag is one of the coolest fuckers who ever lived. He's a nice guy and one hell of a guitar player. I've seen Pantera many times. Phil might always be a billigerent drunk, but Dimebag and Vinnie and Rex were all just laid back, cool, normal guys who just so happen to be in what I consider the top three metal bands who ever lived.

This just ruined my day. BTW, Vulgar Display of Powere is the best metal album ever made.
