Scouts' take: Davis is versatile enough to play strong safety, where he lined up last year, or outside linebacker, and many feel he will play linebacker because of his lack of ideal speed. However, we expect Carolina to play him at safety, because it's a greater need. The Panthers will have to protect Davis in coverage at times, but he's athletic and explosive enough to stay with most backs and tight ends. He also excels in run support. He is a powerful open-field tackler who takes great pursuit angles and always seems to be around the ball at the end of the play.

Mel Kiper's take: Davis is the best tackler in this draft, a guy who does not miss and finishes hits. If he moves to outside linebacker, he will help shore up the front seven. There is also talk he could play safety if his coverage skills can be protected. But no matter where he ends up playing, he will make an impact. He will offer a good physical presence for the Panthers and is sure to make plays.

I like it for 2 reasons:

1 - Totally out of the blue, not on any mocks, on nobody's radar. Go front office.

2 - No one here is tweaking.

Looking forward to Friday mini camp.

Looks like, long term, a replacement for Minter more than anything. He lacks expierence at safety, and that was his problem last year. When you bite on Ainge's playaction, NFL teams will fool you. But he's a great athlete, and if it works out we finally have someone to match up against a TE.

Interesting pick in that he may not start this year, but could end up being huge. Very Sean Taylor. Gamble started out rough but came on quickly, if Davis can, we could have one hell of a secondary quickly.

Actually Scott Wright (NFL Draftcountdown) had him for us in some mocks, and PFW said we wanted him.

Mangus, its been along time since you really liked a pick. I'm glad.

Why not Johnson. Johnson runs real well, but isnt very physical. For all the names thrown around, only Davis did not have needs to be motivated, needs to be more physical asociated with him.

I'm concerned about the lack of coverage skills, but he's only spent 1 year at the postion. If it doesnt work out, he can be a LB.

I think its an OK pick at minimum, and possibly a really good pick.

BTW, I was at my nieces soccer game during the draft. 1st one Ive missed in 11 years. But I got the alert thing from ESPN, and they've been sending me a text message with every pick. Almost as good as sitting glued to the TV. Just can't discuss.
