He should have been traded after we paid DW, not signed to that deal. Thanks again, Marty.

Panther fans sometimes forget the magnitude of how badly Hurney fucked this team. It's nice to get a reminder every once in a while.

Teams wanted DeAngelo. Stewart is a tough son of a bitch, but can't ever practice in OTA's, and every season just toughs it out to play. Now he's seemingly breaking down.

Either way, if we got rid of either one of them, we weren't gonna get much. But something sure would've been nice I suppose.

It pains me though to look at guys like Rainy and co., these backs who are doing lots of damage who are mid to late round guys that we could've rolled the dice on too.

I mean, keep a lead guy and go with it. In hindsight, the Stewart/Otah first round sure doesn't look as sexy now.

Hindsight? I screamed that shit the day it happened. And don't forget Ellington when discussing late round backs since I complained about taking Barner instead of him.

I do remember you talking about Ellington, and I think Stills as well.

At the time I was miffed about the Stewart pick, but liked the Otah pick, sadly. I'll almost always support a line pick. Just didn't understand a RB in the first round two years in a row.

Technically twice in three years, as Beason was between them, but your point is correct. And the problem wasn't taking OL, it was that I knew from the start that Otah would bust. I guess they panicked after Clady went one pick before #13, then Williams and Cherilus went quickly afterwards. Duane Brown went at #26 and ended up being solid. Still, giving that much to trade back up was dumb even if Otah hadn't been obviously risky.

Right - correction on the years - and Brown would've been a better addition. I liked Otah at the time, was even singing his praises because we were a run oriented team, and I fancied Brown as a softer guy. I recall somewhere reading what a hard worker Otah was, and buying that shit.

OUt of curiosity, since you called it - how did you know or figure Otah would bust?

edit - PP, I'm in the minority of not hating Hurney. I really think his back was against the wall with the schizophrenic bullshit way we were operating around and after the lock out - about trying to boast what big spenders we were, since we were being bashed as being cheap, and all that other horseshit.

The Johnson contract, when even he expressed shock at the overbid was ... sigh. I don't know. I guess I don't hate him. We had some good years. But yeah...he did fuck us. Hard. I'm just not convinced Richardson didn't have a big hand in that.

It was time for him to go though, for sure.

I hated that 2008 first round at the time as much as anyone. No one knew Otah would suck* and we needed OT badly, but we did not need a 1st round RB. I think Ray Rice was in that draft, Forte too. And more.

That started us out on being behind the 8 ball on draft day, robbing Peter to pay Paul, perpetuating the loser strategy of trading your future picks. We gave up #43 & 109 for 2008, #28 in '09 for Otah, when we could have just reached for him in place of Stewart and picked up a complimentary back later.

Hurney is getting love because a few of his draft picks are contributing on a winner, I still say fuck him.

*, sorry, no one but Collin.

and btw, Tolbert went undrafted that year ;-)

    edit:
Note that magnus was a hell of a homer, which is often why we clashed. I love the Panthers but I'll tell my mother she's wrong because I'm not wired to put emotion over reason.
