just throwing this out for conversation on a slow day, would you want Holmgren (seems to have decent Offensive credentials) as a GM (replacing Hurney)and keep the coaching staff relitively intact?

Holmgren as the GM in Seattle wasn't a success, so I wouldn't want him in that capacity. Now, if he desired to get back into coaching... oh, yes.

I wouldn't say he was a failure either. He was GM when acquiring many of the players that led to their successful years beginning in 2003.

He made some good moves, but they were already a reasonably talented team before he even arrived.

Anyway, if he's hired to be a GM, he's hiring a WCO guy to be his head coach. So that excludes this coaching staff.

I think wherever he goes it'll be a way of getting in the door before the season ends and then he'll name himself coach Pat Riley style.

Maybe Parcells changed the paradigm a little but I don't see Holmgren not coaching.

FWIW, as long as he has someone who does most of the work for him, I have no problem with him having final say. But, WCO HC/GMs screw themselves by spreading too thin. I don't believe in head coaches calling plays actively, nor GMs being coaches, and then they want to do all three.

I don't have a problem with WCO coaches for this team. You can run the ball with the WCO, and the guys who are out there from the WCO all did well with the run - Billick had a 2000 yard rusher, Holmgren did well when he had Alexander, Shanahan's rep precedes him, Gruden had surprisingly consistent running games no matter what the QB.

A WCO guy would come in and have a good fix for the 2/3 WR spots, would probably fit in a good QB for the new system, and we have solid pass fits for the RBs and TEs. There'd be the issue of balance, yes, but if you get everything fixed right and keep a 50/50 balance there shouldn't be an issue.

Holmgren himself is an intriguing coach for a total rebuild, since he has more guys out there he's coached with than the other guys - you can expect Blache, Zorn to be out in DC, and they'd make solid position coaches again, and Haskell is out there.

Think Zorn may get another year because despite their record, they're competitive, didn't he install a whole new system?

he didn't really install anything. Zorn, Lewis both come very specifically from the Holmgren system and Holmgren didn't really change anything from when he left SF.

The scheme and system has nothing to do with it really. It's how it's being used. Some coaches - the top guys - can call plays and run a team. I don't think they should, but they can. Guys like Zorn shouldn't be head coach anyway, and never have called plays, so you can see why that was a disaster.

I always took Lewis' hire in Washington to mean they'd put MH in there, but I guess Lewis is another guy who could join a Holmgren staff elsewhere too. I don't see Zorn staying really.

    That's not Snyder's style.
